  • There is no way forward without about 20-40k public executions, and the seizure of trillions in assets. Dropping nukes on Israel, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and qatar should also be absolutely on the table.

It’s a little unnerving for you to make a fair bit of sense, and then to see this little tidbit of insanity slip in there. Disregarding the call for institutional public execution, I would like to formally object to your plan for nuclear war with the Middle East, please.

  • There is a lot of policy failure and blowback that contributes to this, but I like to think the party and the people are finally unable to tolerate Trump’s narcissistic abuse.

This idea of a government based on the destruction of perceived enemies is not sustainable, and is constantly eating itself for sustenance. At some point, you have to actually figure out where money for food is going to come from and screaming into the void about Democrats, immigrants, and abortion doesn’t pay the bills. The American people need healthcare, housing, education, childcare, food, and hope. NOT ICE raids, bizarre southern military excursions, shutdowns, and traumatized federal workers.

To me, this is a wonderful reminder that our votes still matter, and our system - as large and slow and complex as it is - has careful structure and momentum. The Republican Party still must respond as such.

  • While I don’t doubt that, one of the things that Richardson’s coverage does is ground my heavy pessimism: Despite Trump’s corruption, his fascist network still must operate within the bounds of the American government and voting public’s opinion, just like the early Nazi party and other elected fascist movements.

The trove of evidence is hopefully still protected by standards of federal record keeping that can reveal tampering and based on what has already been released, the regime’s ability to control that evidence seems lacking. They will no doubt play up the parts that look bad for the opposition, but if there’s a big photo of Donald J. Trump blowing Bill Fucking Clinton with the travel and financial records to put them in the same place for a weekend, how are they gonna redact that?

And from all accounts, it’s sounding like whatever is in there is Chernobyl level heat.

  • I highly recommend Heather Cox Richardson’s near-daily coverage of current politics, and The Files.

From a historian’s perspective, she seems to think that Trump’s sudden reversal after fighting tooth and nail to avoid this release is because he realizes he’s lost control of the House republicans on this issue as their voters are also frothing at the mouth to get these files released. And, that if he’s so afraid of what’s in the FBI’s complete set after the horror of what has already been released, what the hell is actually in there? She also seems to think that if the bill gets to his desk, he’ll all but have to release them, but personally I don’t see him ever caving to that. He could release them by executive order today if he actually wanted the files released.

Here’s my take: I find it pretty incredible that people don’t seem to understand the depths of Trumps depravity when he extorted our allies, sicked a hillbilly mob on the capital, used The Office of the President to hawk merch, and openly mocked American democracy, but grooming underage girls is where we all collectively draw the line. The mountains of evidence of his extreme criminality, his appointment of white and Christian nationalists, and his alliances with America’s sworn enemies melting down our government? Water off a duck’s back apparently.

I’m all for whatever it takes to dismantle the Trump regime, but I seriously doubt undoctored evidence ever sees the light of day. And if it does, he will be dead long before he ever sees justice for it. But, if it FINALLY sours voters enough to not vote for him in the next election, I’ll take it.

  • There are some legal scenarios under which this could technically happen, but it would be monumental and shocking if the Trump regime could actually manage to wield the coordination and leverage the trust needed to pull it off:

Peabody, email to FactCheck.org, Nov. 15: There are actually five fairly clear scenarios through which a twice-elected president could again become or act as president:

    Such a person could[:]

    (1) serve as Vice President and then become President in the case of removal, death or resignation of the President

    (2) serve as Vice President and then act as President during a period in which the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of the Office, as authorized by (a) a written declaration from the President him or herself, or (b) through the VP and a “majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments” or some other authorized body indicating that the President is disabled/unable to discharge the duties of the office (25th Amendment)

    (3) become Vice President-elect and then President if “at the time fixed for the beginning of the term of the President, the President-elect shall have died” (20th Amendment)

    (4) become Vice President-elect and then act as President if “a President shall not have been chosen before the time fixed for the beginning of [the] term, or if the President-elect shall have failed to qualify” (20th Amendment)

    (5) act as President under circumstances provided for by the Succession Act of 1947 which kicks in [when] both the President and the VP are unable to discharge their duties

Despite Vance having the electability of a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, it would be pretty delicious to see him become President with Trump as his VP, only for Vance to refuse to resign. Watching the administration eat itself to get him out would be the height of irony.
