subtitle playback

This is still a little weird. I found that the web client (in a browser) handles this really well with default settings. However, if I try to use the desktop app or a mobile client, I have to force it to burn in the subtitles for them to show up reliably. Fortunately, there are per-client settings for this now:

I have hosted a wordpress site on my unraid box before, but ended up moving it to a VPS instead. I ended up moving it primarily because a VPS is just going to have more uptime since I end up tinkering around with my homelab too often. So, any service that I expect other people to use, I often end up moving it to a VPS (mostly wikis for different things). The one exception to that is anything related to media delivery (plex, jellyfin, *arr stack), because I don’t want to make that as publicly accessible and it needs close integration with the storage array in unraid.

I love all the news articles that get posted to this community, but sometimes its just a lot of fun to vent and complain about mundane stuff. I hope we get more posts like this.

That being said, I don’t find myself on 93 too often these days as I live in Metrowest, so I am on 90 and 95 much more. I run into similar issues though on a couple ramps. One that drives me crazy in particular is the route 9 exit for Framingham off of 90 West (so, the reverse situation you are describing). People slow down for that exit like 2 miles in advance when it is completely unnecessary. Slow down on the ramp, not on the highway people. It’s not hard!

I have lived in the area now for (checks notes) 14 years and there are sometimes just certain spots that are always annoying.

A mixed bag of results here. I don’t think this really supports either side of the Question 2 debate, but it does show that the state is going to want this data no matter the outcome of Question 2. Like I said in the previous post about Question 2, if teachers are supportive of Question 2 in order to not feel pressure to “teach to the test”, then I think the rationale is wrong. These tests aren’t going anywhere. Even if MCAS were completely eliminated, something like MCAS is going to take its place.

I am a current resident of MA , but moved here as an adult, so I don’t have firsthand experience with these tests. However, I moved to several different states through school and took something like the MCAS in those states. The reality is that even if Question 2 were to pass, the state would likely want to keep MCAS (just without the graduation requirement) or replace MCAS with some other standardized test as a way to assess school district performance. Which should be a good thing since it is how the state can identify school districts that are underperforming and providing them the help they need.

I am sympathetic to the Teachers’ views that they feel like they are being asked to teach to the test. However, in those other states I went to school in, those teachers still spent time teaching to the test because the school district was exerting pressure to improve their performance on those tests. So, the pressure to teach to the test is unlikely to go away, but will simply be applied from somewhere else. I don’t think Question 2 is the freedom from standardized testing requirements that the Teacher’s Union is portraying here.

I would be more supportive of additional ways to alternatively meet the requirement, especially for those students that might struggle with a language barrier.

One recent example from a game that I ran is that my players caused a dust explosion using flour. I had to do some quick googling to figure out how big that might be to best gauge the damage (turns out it can be pretty big), but I awarded inspiration for the creativity (despite getting caught up in the blast themselves). This was also a bit of irony since the people they were attacking were assassins that ran a bakery as cover.
