If the income tax graduations are steep enough then the billionaire class will optimize to minimize taxes by reducing their own income in favor of reinvesting in their business and employees. In theory. In reality I’m sure they’d find some way to squirrel it away while their employees apply for and get denied food stamps.

politics @lemmy.world•Serious: What is going to take to face the fascist threat in America?
1·1 year agoGood point. I was thinking that every elected official should have all of their money and assets forfeited. And those of immediate family members. And have trials on a case by case basis to take the assets of anyone who they materially helped with the undue influence of their position.

1·1 year agoI mean… if we are to take the batman approach and let them live, then we need ironclad solutions to prevent this shit from happening again. Loss of trigger finger for sure. Make them record “I was wrong and my decisions led to the destruction of people’s livelihoods and the deaths of innocent people. Do not let me do this again. Do not let other people do this in the future. We must learn from our mistakes and I will be held accountable for the rest of my life.” and if they refuse to repeat that while facing a camera, then they get to rot in a cell until they do. Make those recordings public and make them watch those recordings. And they don’t get to vote.

5·1 year agoI never accused them of being smart enough to see the ramifications of their destruction. They also don’t realize their little technofacist enclaves will be swiftly invaded by previously aggrieved states with standing armies that want to exact revenge for the US’s myriad crimes against humanity inflicted upon them.

6·1 year agoYeah, the chaos of it all is a tactic. Russel Vought saw how the firehose of falsehoods in the original Trump admin was weaponized to allow all kinds of illegal and horrible shit take place with no consequences. So he picked his horse and bet the house that Trump would be the perfect cover for the destruction of the federal government. He and Trump would use that opportunity to steal tens (or hundreds) of billions each so they could then become neofeudal lords of the ashes.

5·1 year agoWeirdly, yes. The conservatives have been screeching for decades that the federal government is too powerful. Their goal was always to reduce federal control in order to get more control for themselves. They were told by the federal government “dont pollute that river, it’s illegal.” and so they decided “well if the government can’t tell me not to pollute that river, then I can pollute that river.” So I believe that was their long goal. Make the government completely intolerable, even for the most devout big-government liberal. Then they will have a cultural movement to dismantle the government.
Then when everyone is distracted - whoops slavery is legal again.

politics @lemmy.world•Serious: What is going to take to face the fascist threat in America?
191·1 year agoEven my dumb as shit family members who voted for trump are beginning to turn on him. I don’t think Americans really have any tolerance for his turn to fascist dictatorship. Sure, a few deplorables out there do - but we outnumber them 100 to 1.
Personally I think MAGA is going to eat itself. Especially if Trump dies in his sleep.
The real problem is this cycle will happen again in if we don’t have a reckoning where the fascists and their sympathizers are made to permanently renounce those leanings. I think we should take their trigger fingers.

10·1 year agoYeah it diverted a ton of cops from sitting in a parked car scrolling instagram while collecting overtime on the highest salary in the region. But I guess them being overpaid worthless shitbags was preferable to being fascist shitbags.

politics @lemmy.world•N.Y. bill would aim to counter threat of federal funding withholdings to state
18·1 year agoSigh. I feel like this was the long game for Project 2025. They want to break up the US Federal government by getting us to all hate it and its power. Then it would be more like a confederacy where each state is more autonomous. Once that happens, the states themselves will be much easier for the billionaires to conquer and turn into their own fiefdoms.

101·1 year agoOnly what about 5-10% of people believe. The rest were just too stupid to know better and voted along with them or didn’t vote against it.
5-10% of American voters is still multiple millions of people who are behaving like rabid dogs right now.

8·1 year agoWhen they shut the government down, there is still a huge pile of money to be dispersed. It just closes down some offices. Trump has stolen many billions from congressionally allocated uses. That money will pay the gestapo while everyone else eats ramen until the government reopens
