I run this setup, mostly. For backups, I just run a BorgBackup cronjob over the Maildir and the configuration folders.

My mail client is mu4e. Advantages over a web-based mail client: I can safely encrypt my e-mail (web-based GnuPG has too many flaws) and all the e-mails are stored on my hard disk for searching and archiving.

On the other hand, Technitium comes with a fairly useful configuration straight out of the box. If you only want to use it on your home LAN (and therefore don’t necessarily need SSL), the only thing you really need to change is the block list field.

I use and warmly recommend Technitium DNS. Unlike most other solutions, it uses the root servers by default while still providing an ad blocker, DoH, DoQ etc. - and it does not even require any command-line kung-fu for that (except for the installation, which is one command).

“Low power consumption” in absolute numbers is not quite the same thing as “energy efficiency” for a server. Desktop CPUs are more useful for servers and - depending on the architecture - cheaper per W.

A laptop is a waste for servers. Too much energy consumption in my opinion.

I replaced nextCloud’s file sharing with Syncthing just recently, as I found myself only synchronising between two computers (one desktop, one smartphone) anyway. :-)

I don’t think there is a Python 2 version for retro equipment (DOS?). ;-)

Firefox isn’t that great for FTP either. Gopher still exists :-) and I’d love to use it even more.

It sure does, and I am mentally prepared to move over to Hugo. I just haven’t had the inner calmness needed to do so just yet, and I probably won’t in the near future. At least I could still use WordTsar for it!
