Dear democratic party: as a voter in a state that went from purple to more red, I was still voting for you in every election and outside of the blue cities. Was. I would rather vote for a pile of dogshit than your party again.

I grew up in rural Ohio and spent time in rural TX as well for a brief period. As a kid, I walked about 20+ minutes to bail hay in my neighbor’s fields in the summer for cash. I am currently farming in rural Tohoku Japan.

Certain things are similar and certain things are different. To call where I live a suburb is just wrong yet we, and those even more rural than us, have fibre. I looked at buying land on the side of a mountain before buying this place and, although I’d have to pay for the run from the nearest point, I could still get fiber. Being Japan, I of course had to apply by fax machine, but the infrastructure is there for most of the country, both urban and rural.

Edit to add: we have multiple fiber companies as well, at least one of which being a fully private company.

If trump is allowed to run again, then the constitution does not matter and, likely, the elections would not matter.

I’ve been in Japan a decade and you couldn’t pay me enough to live in the US. I have great work-life balance at my main job which is fully remote.

So that means other states can just start randomly detaining members of their government, I guess? What a clusterfuck.

When my parents die, I will renounce. I need to be able to get to them without issue in the event of emergency.

I hold two citizenships but live in a third country. If I were to get citizenship here (Japan) I would be forced to renounce both my existing citizenships.

So the exact process seems to vary by state, but it generally boils down to:

• some for of verification and registration for the year (my state requires this yearly and you are expected to initiate this as it does not happen automatically)
• get an email or physical mail ballot (not all states allow email from what I gather)
• fill out the ballot, various other forms, and send them to the state via physical mail

I took “for us to go back to paper voting” to include somehow requiring overseas voters and did indeed wonder at the cost of it

Overseas voters exist. We still have to file taxes every year, can’t invest in a lot of things in retirement plans (look up PFICs), and generally are fucked by the IRS by laws presumably meant to keep the rich from hiding money. There is no way I could pay the thousands of dollars to fly to the states and back to vote in “my state” (in which I haven’t lived in 10 years, but the US system is a trainwreck).

Yeah, I haven’t bought beef that I recall in over a year now. Had it for the first time in ages last week at my wife’s parents’ house and her friend’s BBQ. Eating it only a couple of times makes the taste that much better when I do, but man was quitting it several times a week hard.

That party never would have survived in 2nd ed.

At least some versions of D&D had rules where, if one player were surrounded by other hostiles (I think it was 6 or 8), they were basically helpless. There might have been a save to be able to do something, but I can’t recall.

You have to file federal taxes. Maybe state taxes. You don’t necessarily have to pay depending upon how much (in USD) you make. Things also depend upon per-country tax treaties. The shitty part, at least for me, is that I can’t use the ISA and similar programs here in Japan for retirement because the US considers them all passive foreign investments (PFICs) which require copious paperwork and punitive taxes wiping out any tax-advantaged retirement savings. Also can’t just invest non-taxed income in many things in the US either.

Voting being at the state level also just fucks all kinds of other things up with taxes and the like.

The old TSR/SSI game Unlimited Adventures had randomized potion colors. It’s also how I learned that khaki is not pronounced ‘kahiki’ when trying to explain what was going on to someone (I knew khakis as a type of trouser not a color).
