  • Noooo. Really?

    Edit:

In 2024, 21 percent of adults in the U.S. were found to be illiterate, while 54 percent of adults had a literacy below a sixth grade level, according to the National Literacy Institute.

    What the fuck.

And that surprise isn’t at the individuals. Not their fault. Just trying to get my head around how a developed nation could be like that…

Edit Edit: I’m still trying to get my head around this. I get around Europe feeling like a fucking moron for only being basic level bilingual.

  • What about those times a thing is said then the literal opposite thing is done? I’ve seen a lot pop up.

Outside the US we call it “back flipping” which is fancy political jargon for “a straight up fucking lie” and it can end up in political suicide.

Do people just ignore it or do mental gymnastics occur?

More and more I’m convinced most Americans have no idea what a liberal, leftist, or other terms actually are. They’re just parroting the words they hear from their feeds.

‘Liberal’ is the funniest because both red and blue accuse each other of being them. My guess is blues think liberalism is laissez-faire and the reds think it’s woke social freedoms. They’re both slightly on the right track, but not at all.

And in the rest of the free world…

Liberals: No one should live in poverty regardless of their ability to perform labour.

Leftists: Yoooo, 40 hrs is fucked. What is this, the 1300s?

Liberals: Actually, yeah that is kind of fucked. An employer shouldn’t be ble to encroach on an employee’s life that much. This is an imbalance of liberties.

Leftist: Great! So what are we going to do bout it?

Liberals: Fuck all. We can’t be sure employees don’t want this too. Besides, someone will sort it out soon, they always do.

Leftists: I’ll donate a union $5 so I can tell my friend I’m left.

And in the next five years, some prolific young gun politician swoops in the 35 hour work week. But due to cultural reasons, everyone keeps working 40 hours and gets plenty of overtime for it. This having the employer pay more and the employee see little benefit because the state haven’t adjusted their now dated tax brackets. But along with very good minimum wage standards and an unemployment rate < 5%, both the leftist and the liberal never found the true source of the poverty and so continued using foreign corporations and large franchise to fulfill almost all of their needs. And everyone but their local infrastructures and communities lived happily ever after until the next global recession hit. The leftist and liberal “really meant it this time” when they said they’d support local and try to live more independently, but the inconvenience of it meant they silently did not.

  • Point is, the US for example, has never been pure democracy. It has borrowed democratic traits, but it is not a democracy. The founding fathers put stops in place literally to prevent democratic behaviours, putting more power to a balanced state, rather than the people.

As an example, Adams loathed the idea of women and people without property getting to vote. These are votes toward representatives that they did not even initially get a say in. Then there’s the electoral college, the party system, etc. These are things they put in place to prevent their percieved shortcomings of democracy.

So, really, you’d say the US is showing fewer democratic values than it has in some time, but it was never a democracy.

  • Uuuuh… Should probably look up what democracy is, where it came from, and how it’s been declined.for many, many, many centuries before our time.

The general consensus is about 60% values of democratic nature works well before leaning fully into it. We have plenty of history to show us it’s shortcomings, while just as much to show us why much of it is crucial.

I’m more inclined “democracy” in this meme just means “back in my day” when things were better.

You directly compared the two of them, but okay.

Covered this hypothetical in another comment, just didn’t think it’d actually happen…

    “Fruit.”

“DID YOU JUST COMPARE APPLES AND ORANGES!!! You directly compared the two of them!!!”

Nah, mate. There was no comparison here.

There was no consideration of one to the other; which is more, which is less, what the differences are and which one you should pick if you remember to like and subscribe. Perhaps the definition of “compare” changed this week, I don’t know or care.

Enjoy the day. Just let it go.

    Here’s another meme…

    Wrong room.

We can compare apples to oranges because they’re both fruits, but the phrase exists for a reason. This is a predominantly US community of which all are highly strung more than their usual shit right now, and you’re coming in unusually hostile as though you have a stake in the matter of this specific subject.

Chill out. Doesn’t mean you’re wrong, but read the room and ask yourself if it’s worth the energy. You wint

Edit: I mean, fuck. Look at my comment. And I was putting shit on the guy… They don’t know what they want. Give em a few days.
