Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Recomendations please for a self-hosted contact form on VPS (RESOLVED)English
9·10 months agoI’m a flask developer but even so I would use PHP for this. There are a million php-based contact form scripts on the web and configuring caddy to use PHP will be easier than python/flask.
As for the sending email part - don’t run a smtp server locally, too much hassle. Smtp2go has a free tier which will be fine.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•I am curious about hosting my own lemmy/mastodon serverEnglish
41·10 months agoIMO Lemmy/PieFed is safer to run because the community mods will delete anything illegal, which will delete it for you, too. About 5 instances host 95% of communities worth joining so it’s easy for us to coordinate defense.
Mastodon is thousands of instances and more wild west. Bad stuff can come from anywhere.
Installed qbittorrent and downloaded a few seasons of Linux isos onto a vps. Discovered accessing those files over SSH to be too slow to play them without buffering so installed filebrowser to get them via http which worked well.
It’s been a long long time since I used bittorrent and wow it works so much better these days.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Backblaze is slow for Nextcloud. Any recommendations for faster s3 compatible storage?English
18·1 year agoThere are sooo many S3 providers.
Hetzner is 5 Euro / mo for 1 TB (traffic is extra). Cloudflare R2 is $15 / mo for 1 TB (traffic is free and they charge per GB so you’d probably pay much less than that).
One availability zone is enough. I am not convinced that Aurora is good value.
This seems like an ad for pulumi, whatever that is.
Data center servers are a different breed. I got an old one for cheap once and only ran it for a few minutes because it sounded like a jet engine. No way to make that thing efficient.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Anyone have the experience registering a domain name with false personal information?English
310·1 year agoUsing fake information is mandatory otherwise you’ll get doxed - the domain ownership is public information, including your full name, physical address, email address and phone number. If someone knows you own the domain, they can look it up using
whois.I got death threats that way, one time.
Check out Big Blue Button - https://demo.bigbluebutton.org/
Their website talks all about using it for teaching students but it’s really just like Jitsi with more features.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•What are the minimum or recommended requirements for a personal home server?English
3·1 year agoThe things I paid attention to was
USB3 - you need this otherwise connecting external drives will be a joke Motherboard needs to accept up to 32 GB of RAM. Mine currently has only 8 but knowing I can upgrade is nice.
Quiet - must be silent when idle.
CPUs of less than 8th? gen will suck at video transcoding due to lacking certain capabilities. Important if running jellyfin, etc.The beauty of self hosting is it’s all about your individual circumstances so you priorities and acceptable tradeoffs will differ.

14·1 year agoTitle updated.
I think this is a case where changing it to “lies” won’t violate the community rule “Title must fairly describe link contents. If your title differs from the site’s, it should only be to add context or be more descriptive”…
You’re going to have to prioritise.
Find changes that:
Save a decent amount of money Are low risk Don’t take too long to do Can be easily backed-out of
They’re not a gulag tho because people came back from the Siberian gulags after their sentences (assuming they survived).
No one comes back from El Salvador even if a judge orders it.
