Eggs are about $4.50 near Charlotte, NC for the cheapest dozen in budget stores like Aldi as of a few days ago. About 6 months ago they were closer to $1.35, so this is a massive increase for us even if it’s cheap compared to other parts of the country.

13·2 years agoYes, I 100% do. If R or D was arbitrarily assigned to everyone at birth, then no it wouldn’t make sense, but this isn’t a double-blind control study. Roughly 2/3 of those who never attended college–which for many reasons (reading comprehension, exposure to new ideas, exposure to media literacy training) probably correlates pretty strongly with ability to spot misinformation–voted R in the last election. 2/3 of those with advanced degrees–the other end of that spectrum–voted D.

4·2 years agoThe smaller one, and am very happy with the decision. The selling point on the EUV is really more rear legroom, but it has a more sloped hood to look sportier so you actually have less trunk space and a smaller opening unfortunately. It also gets less range by a bit, and has a longer hood so harder to park in a dense city if that’s a concern.
That being said, neither are fantastic road trip cars. I’ve taken it ~4 hours away, but you have to stop for about an hour on both outbound and return legs to comfortably make it and be able to drive around your destination. And I wish the trunk was ~1 inch longer or a bit flatter, you can only fit a normal rolling suitcase in the center, so it’s almost a 3-suitcase trunk with room on top but is actually only 2 without some significant Tetris.

7·2 years agoSmaller EVs like the nissan leaf or the Chevy bolt (rip) can be had for less than most lightly used cars with the tax credit, my 2023 new bolt was 22k with tax etc., whereas comparable small hatchback/sedans from e.g. Honda were 25k+ for a 2020 model. The median income for Californians is ~$45k, so as long as the credit isn’t used for things like the hummer or Porsche evs this is probably helping a lot of middle- and middle-low income people, though not lower income unfortunately

243·2 years agoI for sure think that the DNC aren’t to blame in the same way that a firefighter who uses a garden hose to try to put out a burning house isn’t responsible for the smoking ruins when there are other people throwing molotovs through the windows, slashing the tires of the firetrucks, and getting the neighbors to throw bricks at the firefighters.
That being said, if my house was on fire and it was clear that I couldn’t get the active vandals to stop despite them burning themselves in the process, I think it’s justified to work on replacing or training the firefighters to be more competent and/or rutheless with dealing with the threat.
Some of it is 100% misogyny, I think some of it is also that 4 years ago the country was literally on fire in a lot of places and Trump was obviously to blame for a lot of it, so it didn’t matter so much to apathetic voters if Biden’s messaging was weak. Kamala may have won then too, though misogyny would have made it closer. Now the country is much more stable but still not great, but Democrats are in charge and therefore obviously to blame, so people who largely haven’t been affected negatively by the Republicans (e.g. men, especially non-desperately-poor white men), are apathetic again

55·2 years agoOh God, I was imagining one of his weird motions that sort of looks like a hand job but isn’t supposed to, but yeah this is super deliberate.
I mean there’s been a lot to help corporations and the rich I don’t agree with but the current administration has also given tons of resources to the IRS to claw back evaded taxes from the wealthy, made moves to bust monopolies and price-fixing practices, and while they aren’t directly responsible there has been a historic expansion of unions not seen in my lifetime

2·2 years agoThis premise gets thrown around a lot but I actually disagree. “Every time people turn out” is always also thrown in there like some arbitrary thing–when I think the past several election cycles have shown that when there are younger, more progress candidates who make it past the primaries turnout shoots up. Courting the 3% uninformed flip-floppers by moving right is a losing strategy when you could be motivating your own party to turn out by moving left and driving turnout up. There’s no money in that though, so dumb centrists get wooed
