  • Generally speaking, it’s almost always a bad idea to fudge things to make it worse, but acceptable to fudge things to make it better.

If your players are rolling well, good for them! Sometimes players want to feel really lucky and like their investments paid off. If that makes your campaign too easy there are lots of ways to address it, and an easy fight will rarely if ever cause a campaign to crumble

But a series of bad rolls? That can absolutely melt a campaign. It can suck the soul out of a party and make things feel unfair or too difficult even when it’s just a string of bad luck. Preventing a TPK or allowing a PC to narrowly escape certain doom can be the difference between a player losing interest and them learning how to mitigate risk.

GMs should all spend some time reading up on the psychology of games and player behavior. Stress and frustration exist in the strangest, most illogical places because our brains are strange and illogical.

    1. I know. I’m in favor, to the degree that it’s possible and non-punitive. But until we’re prepared to do it at home we cannot be demanding it abroad

    2. I fully concur that Israel is an oppressive state and deserves sanctions. Even more so now. Netenyahu is a criminal and so is most of his cabinet. I won’t equivocate on that. The hasidics especially are despicable. I just know there are a whole lot of reasonable people living in Israel who ought not lose their nationality at this stage

    3. first of all I never said which had to come from where or when. But if you want to be serious, them I expect kindness in the form of ousting Hamas. That’s it. Get rid of the people whose charter is the destruction of the Jewish state in favor of their own.

Edit: call it performative, but you were at 0 votes on your reply and I’m using my vote to put you at +1 because you are engaging in genuine dialogue, so far

  • “BuT tHeY aRe CoLoNiZeRs AnD iSrAeL sHoUlDn’T eXiSt!”

Cool. So every country is gonna give back their land to the indigenous peoples they took it from, right? Right?!

We can start with America and work our way down the list from there.

Someday people will figure out that all of this, all of it, everything we have, is built with the blood of innocents. And we only have three options now: start repairing these relationships through kindness, grace, and good works; watch one side wipe out the other; or fuel the ongoing violence in perpetuity.

That’s all we have left and I personally prefer the first option but so, so many people opt for 2 or 3 that it makes me numb.

I listen to NPR as well, have for years, donate to my local station, and I’ve only ever heard them discuss right-wing talking points as exactly that: clearly labeled right-wing talking points that are relevant to informing listeners about the current state of the national discourse.

While anonymous donors of any kind rub me the wrong way, the article you linked doesn’t provide evidence of the things I was asking for citations about.

Rather it specifically talks about a) concerns about the rapidity of journalism within NPR when having to go through more editor review and b) accusations of left-leaning bias from a former employee

I appreciate your concerns but the links you provided don’t back up the claims I was responding to, and while they are concerning for a few reasons, none of those reasons are “becoming more right wing” or “repeating right wing talking points as fact or opinion”.

  • It’s very possible with a coalition formed through other recent success stories like Mamdani, she’s concluded that a coup of sorts is possible (and I mean that with the utmost excitement). They might have numbers showing now is the time to capitalize on a ground swell and really shift the party. I’m assuming they’ve got some sort of data backing this, even if it’s just “we don’t know if we can win but we know the establishment Democrats will lose”

  • My neighbor Steve says he knew Robinson personally, even went to the same church, and it was a brain parasite that caused him to go crazy and shoot someone.

I’m just gonna print that in the New England Journal of Medicine, because after all, it’s the information I have, and I can always retract it later, right?

    /s 🙄

Misinformation is deeply dangerous and respectable journalists have a duty not to print bullshit in the first place. Sure, mistakes happen, but we don’t just hand-wave it away with “well, they said sorry sooooo 🤷‍♀️”.

  • I’ll take the downvotes to point out the political reality:

Raising money is literally the DNC’s primary role. It is a coalition of people raising money collaboratively, with the understanding that agreeing to the party policy as a group is a requirement for being a member of the group.

So when he says that Hogg is stealing his spotlight and making it difficult to build the network he needs to raise funds, he’s not out of line.

He is INCREDIBLY shortsighted in failing to connect “supporting good candidates” with “ability to secure votes” which itself is a necessary component of long term fundraising. But let’s call a spade a spade: raising money is what the DNC is all about, by definition, and without those funds they have no purpose, let alone ability to promote candidates

  • Everyone who needs to strike is living paycheck to paycheck. Nobody wants to become homeless in order to strike. And our media and networking are largely controlled by compromised assets.

I’ve been in and out of politics as a personal interest since the early 2000a. We’re in a really bad situation right now.

Without a central voice to organize and lead people we’re not going to be able to coordinate enough people across the country

  • I want you to understand what it is you’re talking about when you say things like this:

You are asking for what it’s the equivalent of all of Europe revolting against leadership that never leaves Prague.

America is really fucking big. I live in Seattle. I have been protesting. But my state officials are already more or less on my side

For me to protest in a way that actually causes a problem for the people in power I would need to drive no less than 41 hours if I didn’t sleep. Realistically it’s 3-4 days each way. Or hundreds of dollars in airfare or train tickets.

And of course I’d be fired for missing work.

I’m pissed as any American but what the fuck am I supposed to do? Asking America to revolt isn’t like asking England or France or Belgium. Our leaders are in a proverbial ivory tower and we’ve been stripped of any ability to effect change through anything but a national strike, which has not been successfully organized, largely due to the scale required.

We have 341m people on 10M km² of land. Compare that to somewhere like Germany with 84m people on 357k km²

It’s a much easier proposition getting 10% of Germans to their capital than getting 10% of Americans to ours

  • Do not bring your normal personal devices to China. They are notorious for injecting spyware on foreign devices at every opportunity. Use a freshly formatted device and create all new accounts to use with it.

Regarding services: do not use self-hosted services unless you you spin up fresh, isolated instances of your services for use while abroad and spin them down afterwards, including formatting any OS they were hosted on.

Regarding VPN: because we are assuming that any device used in China is compromised, do not connect to your VPN unless you have set up a segregated VLAN and are connecting through a VPN server instance created specifically for use while in China.

Basically, assume anything you use in China is compromised. And assume your connections are being monitored. And assume that any device you are connecting to from China is at risk of being compromised. So everything needs to be segregated from the rest of your network and set up specifically to be deleted after you’re back home.
