  • The term as used might not be consistent with a specific definition, but I’m pretty sure this wasn’t about “technically, that isn’t the correct term to denounce his sexual abuse of minors with” so much as shifting the goalposts for what counts as sexual abuse of minors in the first place. It’s a shorthand, and both parties agree what it’s short for, it’s just that they draw the lines for that thing differently.

So no, it’s not that people “hate to think things through rationally”, because rationally thinking things through makes it clear that the context isn’t a scientific one, but a moral and legal one. It’s not wrong, you’re just emotionally attached to a specific meaning.

I’d be more concerned about her being too right wing.

Two things can be true at once.

But also, 59 is getting close to geriatocracy territory. Just because the Senate is named after an institution of old men doesn’t mean it should strive to imitate all the bullshit of its namesake.

  • The job of a defender is to hold the judicial system to a high standard, to ensure the prosecution does its job properly and to provide a counterweight on the scales of justice.

If a criminal walks free, it’s not the fault of the defender, but of the prosecution if they failed to find convincing evidence of his guilt.

Coversely, if an innocent person does get convicted, the defender failed to effectively refute the evidence.

Of course, this idealism doesn’t hold if the system is fucked by crooked courts, biased judges and competent, committed counsel being unaffordable to poor people, but that also doesn’t mean the defender is to blame for playing their part well.

  • Progressives and liberals can absolutely work together to rally against a common enemy. The fascists clearly are the bigger problem, if you’re not a fan of authoritarian oppression.

That “if” there is a big issue though, because “leftists” as such aren’t a single unified force. There is a vocal portion that evidently has no issue with authoritarian control. We don’t need to dig into reasons here, but I think it’s important to acknowledge that distinction.

All the more critical then is the visibility and unity of the democratic strains of leftism, standing shoulder to shoulder with other enemies of authoritarianism.
