Public sunscreen stations? It’s about time! If there’s anything I learned from the '90s it’s that everyone should wear sunscreen.

Their ICE recruitment bit had me in tears. (NSFW, death of animals)
The Washington Post published an op-ed 9 years ago (Jesus, it’s been that long?) suggesting that Trump launched his political career out of spite after being laughed at during the 2011 correspondence dinner.

Free is good, of course. But I also have some gripes about how Band functions so I’m interested to see what else is out there. Thanks for the Campfire recommendation; I will check it out.
There are lots of arguments in favor of environmental protections even if someone thinks CO2 is not an issue. Think smog over major cities, or rivers being too polluted to swim in, or oil spills. You can’t eat the fish you catch in many water bodies because of industrial contamination with heavy metals and PCBs. Mine tailings leach chemicals out into lakes and rivers. This is all very visible stuff that cannot be waved away with vague doubts.
You can counter the “drill baby drill” people by pointing out that using up our oil first makes us dependent on other countries in the future. Given that the world has a finite supply of oil, it’s smart to keep ours in the ground as much as possible. Hold on to that domestic oil as a future “strategic reserve,” and focus on developing renewables for our daily energy needs.

Well-meaning people: We are requiring the city to install X miles of bicycle infrastructure!
City: Slaps some paint in the right lane of a busy road and calls it a bike path. Done!

Don’t give them ideas.
I got to experience it firsthand a few days ago from me a MAGA relative. “Don’t believe the hysterical media. It’s all a manufactured crisis by the liberals to take advantage of people.”
I’m just trying to shitpost in a meme community here. Though, if we want to split hairs, “subsidies” can include government contracts to purchase goods and services:
A subsidy has a very particular meaning under the Subsidies Agreement and U.S. law (Title VII of the Tariff Act of 1930). A subsidy is defined as a “financial contribution” by a government which provides a benefit. The forms that a subsidy can take include:
- a direct transfer of funds (e.g., a grant, loan, or infusion of equity);
- a potential transfer of funds or liabilities (e.g., a loan guarantee);
- foregone government revenue (e.g., a tax credit); or
- the purchase of goods, or the provision of goods or services (other than general infrastructure).

Fake news! It’s actually $38 billion.
I always took the story as monarchist rather than fascist. Simba’s family is the ruling blood line, hence why the throne passes from Simba’s father to Scar to Simba. Kings and queens are standard fare in Disney’s animated movies. But I suppose fascist versus monarchist is a distinction without a difference here.
some of the embedded ideology is very disturbing. Some authors have argued that the movie implicitly supports fascism
The 1994 version, or the 2019 remake? The original had the “Be Prepared” musical sequence where the hyenas are goose-stepping for Scar, clearing framing them as akin to Nazis parading for Hitler. I have not seen the 2019 version to know what may have changed.

Legal citizens get deported, too:
ICE May Have Deported as Many as 70 US Citizens In the Last Five Years (article from 2021, long before our newfound deportation craze): https://immigrationimpact.com/2021/07/30/ice-deport-us-citizens/
Trump immigration raids snag U.S. citizens, including Native Americans, raising racial profiling fears: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/latino/trump-immigration-raids-citizens-profiling-accusations-native-american-rcna189203
The point is not the food, but that our country needs to start relearning to accept immigrants as people. When my ancestors entered the US they did it 100% legally because there were no immigration restrictions; they walked off the boat and got started with their new lives. The bar has been raised dramatically, and I can’t say that has been good for much other than fueling xenophobia.
Trump broke with tradition and didn’t put his hand on the Bible during his inauguration.
One might expect to hear conservative Christians squawking about it, but they have been notably quiet.
News today that the Trump admin is seeking private funding to sweeten the deal to $40B:

There’s also this eye-catcher in the article:
So this “bailout” is a bribe for the voters in Argentina to support Milei.
