I’ve been seeing these memes without context and honestly, I prefer it this way.

I also knew nothing about self hosting, but wanted to move away from Google photos, and that eventually led me towards self-hosting and immich.

Most people recommend using something like Tailscale so you can access your server from anywhere. That wouldn’t necessarily work for me, because I wanted to be able to share links to pics and videos with friends/family who wouldnt be a part of my Tailscale network.

I ended up purchasing a cheap domain, and using cloudflare to allow me to share links broadly. (Because my family deserves better quality videos of my adorable children than the compressed crap that comes through in a group message between iOS and android. I have tried SO hard to convince them to move our group chat do a different platform but I have failed.). It’s probably ill-advised for somebody who knows as little as I do to go this route, but I’m filled with the un-earned confidence of a middle-aged white man.

I also love the photos that show people in clear ponchos. Like, “I understand the functional benefit of clothes, but it has to be clear as a matter of principle.”

We had this in our local, small town police department. Female police officer spoke up and blew the whistle on somebody that was accepting BJ’s to let tickets slide.

The department “downsized”, let her go, then re-upsized to hire a different person back. Then they said her allegations were just in retaliation for being let go. Then she sued for wrongful termination and I THINK she ended up winning.

I might have some of the details mixed up cause this was all going down JUST as I was moving into the town.

To be fair, I did have a baby in 2020 and it felt like every other week they sent an extra check for having a baby. 10/10 would recommend.

I use immich but if there are 100 people in this room, at least 99 of them know more than me so definitely don’t weigh my words too heavily.

For me, it’s family. Even within the US I know there are a lot of better places to live with more to do, more walkable neighborhoods, etc. But my wife and I both have our parents here, and we both have 2 siblings and there are 9 cousins (our generation’s kids) and I love watching them grow up together. As much as I disagree with the politics locally and Nationally, I also love that I don’t have to raise my kids on an island. So it’s either stay here, or join a cult somewhere.

Probably state by state? I remember when I was complaining about party interference with Bernie, then CO saw which way things were going with Trump, and decided to cancel their primary and award all delegates to his opposition (I don’t remember who was still standing).

Edit: Nevermind I finally clicked the link after opening my big mouth and saw that the map shows no primaries were cancelled in 2024. I’ll leave this as a warning. People, don’t be like me. Click the link before replying.
