I don’t know much about how these laws work in the US, but I think that an 18yo having sex with a 17yo is morally no different than a 19yo having sex with an 18yo, and laws should reflect that. At the same time, a 50yo having sex with a 17yo is just as icky as the 50yo having sex with an 18yo.

In some sense, the current America is. It has an authoritarian regime as well, but lacks the renewable energy sources, passenger train infrastructure, and forward-thinking political will in general. Not that I’d want to live in either country, though.

As a person looking at the US from the outside, this is my take:
A common argument for the existence of the second amendment that I’ve read is “it’s hard to oppress a well-armed population”, with which I (somewhat) agree. Of course, many proponents of the 2A are right-wing, but - if you believed what they claimed their beliefs were - you would still expect them to use the 2A when the case they made in their argument occurs.
This meme is mocking US leftists who honestly believed in republican values and are now shocked when finding out what 2A people are really about.

But on a more serious note, this argument applies to the GDP in general – it’s not a measure of how happy, how wealthy, or how productive the people of a given nation are. Yet, continuous growth (measured by GDP) seems to have the highest priority among so-called conservatives and neoliberals. At the same time, they’re mad at poor people for increasing the GDP with government aid and don’t see the irony.
