Yeah but this is Daily Beast; calling out the DT administration (albeit in click-bait ways) is their shtick.

I know about razor bumps and I don’t mean to make it out to be a total non-issue; my problem is with the headline and byline, which seem to make light of what was actually a deeply disturbing speech. “Look at this idiot, ranting about beards, much ado about nothing, don’t even bother reading about what he said, it was just stupid fluff, shoulda been an email lol!” is not the message that the media needs to tell the public when both Hegseth and Trump made several horrifying, fascism-escalating statements today. (And let’s be real, most people don’t actually read the articles, so burying the lede like this is functionally similar to not reporting on it at all.)

His comment about beards is iterally the least problematic/newsworthy part of his speech. Why the fuck would you focus on this and not, I don’t know, his straight outta 1984 “war is peace” statement? Extreme journalistic malpractice.

An accurate map would include countries like Japan (e.g. 2011 earthquake) and South Korea (e.g. 2022 crowd crush) in the “top coverage” category, but that doesn’t fit with the narrative.

I would add to this list, buildings and units that encourage resident diversity. As in, a diversity of ages, household size, economic class (and ideally also race/ethnicity/country of origin). Organically this means a mix of “luxury” and “budget” housing, unit sizes (studio through three bedroom at minimum), building ages and designs, target demographics for shops (e.g. upscale shopping alongside budget grocers), and community amenities (e.g. schools and senior centers). In a pinch subsidized housing can help with integration, but it’s a limited and costly solution.

Even worse is when you try to “support local” and discover that, sure, the local hardware store sponsors the town’s little league team, but the owner also reposts racist memes on his personal social media page. You can’t win.

Step one: live in a country the size of Kentucky with the population of Texas + Florida, half of whom live in the capital’s metro region while the other half live within half-a-day’s drive.

The US’s geography makes comparisons with successful protests in much smaller countries basically moot.

This may have something to do with which states do all-mail voting:

Eight states—California, Colorado, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Vermont and Washington and the District of Columbia—allow all elections to be conducted entirely by mail.

Utah is deep red, but the others are quite blue. Especially with California in there, that’s a pretty good chunk of the US that votes early by default (there are same-day options in these states, but I suspect that option is often utilized due to procrastination rather than intentionally waiting until election day to vote).
