I deal with shy hyphens a lot. They don’t display unless there’s a line break, so they get copied from various word docs or websites and end up in a database somewhere waiting to piss me off.

Political Memes@lemmy.world•The Trump administration has made drastic cuts to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that threaten to impact weather forecasting (headline from four months ago)English
6·1 year agoApologies for the memories.
What really made my head spin was encountering the self-loathing types who would argue against their own interests. I recall listening to a man, who had lived with another man for about 20 years, tell me that gay marriage was wrong but that he wanted his partner, who was a few decades younger, to be taken care of when he eventually passed.
That was when I truly realized that something was wrong with everything.

16·1 year ago“Exceptions to the rule” were so ingrained in every one when I lived in the south that it was impossible to have a decent conversation about anything.
My gay cousin is fine, but gay people…
My best friend from high school, who is black, is fine, but black people are…
My abortion was necessary but abortion at large is wrong…
My trans child needs gender affirming care but…
My Latino workers are upstanding people but Latinos are…
My EBT/Snap benefits are deserved but people on welfare…
My drug use is fine and doesn’t harm anyone but…
I mean, I know this is a general human trait, but it felt almost institutionalized to a point where people could say incredibly horrible shit about people and then deftly sidestep the contradiction when called out. It really did feel like being in a fever dream (and not from the crippling humidity and heat).

5·1 year agoI hate that you’re right. Normalization is the goal, but this is far from fucking normal. Even language like “51st state” betrays a wild ignorance of Canada and the U.S. procedures for admitting new states.
As a US citizen, Canada should not become part of the US.
It’s been 77 years since the US admitted a new state and almost 100 since we’ve raised the number of representatives. D.C. residents make up a large portion of the federal workforce and even they don’t have representation in Congress. Quite frankly, there’s no political entity in the US with experience bringing in a new state and all the logistics and legal work that it requires.
There is no path for Canadian annexation where the Canadians will be treated fairly.

2·1 year agoThe reading rooms will be filled with golden toilets and copies of Mein Kampf inscribed with Trump’s ridiculous Sharpie signature. Under Mein Kampf you’ll find a print out of the McDonald’s menu and unused Trump casino cocktail napkins.
The stacks will contain nothing but books spray painted gold and autographed copies of The Art of the Deal.
The archives will only contain printed out copies of every tweet and truth-post he’s ever made.

2·2 years agoWell, true. I wasn’t exactly implying that Trump was reading a history book and learned all about McKinley. More like he said, “we should be strong and take land that we want and undo everything Obama and Biden did and tax our enemies and have gold everything,” and someone replied, “oh, sounds like McKinley.” To which Trump replies, “Obama renamed a great president?”

4·2 years agoYou’re probably right about it just being petty, but…
President McKinley also annexed territory (Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam, Philippines, Cuba, etc.), implemented insane tariffs, and pushed to keep the US on the gold standard.
Looks like Jackson isn’t the only president that Trump idolizes.

6·2 years agoMainly because they are members of the class of people that will benefit, directly and indirectly, from a Trump presidency.
Knowing this, they aren’t stupid for voting for the person who will enable the gross accumulation of wealth through the systematic deregulation of industries and privatization of government services. There’s one group of people who will benefit from this: the wealthy (who are disproportionately white and male).
The idiots are people who voted for Trump thinking that his administration will result in a net positive for them socially and economically.
Voting against your interests is dumb; voting inline with your interests is not.
You’re right. No shame there, but definitely knocks a $100 or more off the price.
Scandalous!
True. I was mostly thinking about having to buy keycaps aftermarket when the prices double/triple and having to source all the different kits.
Personally, I think I have three times as many keycap sets than I do keyboards.
Yep! This is far from the strangest layout and keycap use out there, but you’ll find that Enter and Shift keys are more common for split spacebar layouts on larger (and saner) 40% keyboards.
This is still a split spacebar layout though, the person on reddit who built this thing even said that they just didn’t have the right sized blank keycaps. This is very normal for small keyboards since keycap sets usually are designed for regular layouts and don’t always have the right size, sculpt, and legend for weird layouts.
Don’t forget keycaps! It’s where the real money is lost.
That set looks like GMK Blue Samurai, which sells new for $150.
Split spacebars are thing mostly because of layouts that won’t support a normal spacebar key. But, since most of these keyboards have user created and designed firmware, one could assign those spacebar keys to do anything.
I have a few keyboards with split spacebars where the “right” spacebar is normal; it’s just a spacebar but small. The “left” space does dual duty; tap it and it’s a spacebar, hold it down and it becomes a modifier key for a custom layer. Custom layers are used on small keyboards to make the “missing” keys available, sort of like how a phone keyboard has number layer and symbols layer.
I fully embraced this habit of split spacebars because I cannot train myself to use my left thumb to hit space for the life of me even though I’m a touch typist. Since my right thumb is the only digit hitting space, may as well get some use out of the rest of the space taken up by that spacebar.

It’s an appeal to vanity (a troll). Trump is wildly vain and if he thinks this qualifies him for a Nobel (it doesn’t) then he might just put the worm back in its jar for awhile.
