glad to see homophobia is alive and well
Message me and let me know what you were wanting to learn about me here and I’ll consider putting it in my bio.
I definitely feel like I’m more of like a dumpling than a woman at this point in my life.

glad to see homophobia is alive and well

ha, I’m already unemployed, they screwed themselves on that one

As she waits for a decision in the Ter Apel asylum seekers’ center in the Netherlands, Arc is pessimistic about her chances. She says Dutch government employees have told her they don’t want to “p*** off” the U.S. by branding it an unsafe country.
She expects to be deported, and when that happens, she fears that the Trump administration will find some pretext to imprison her with men.
“I don’t want to be the person that makes the Netherlands decide it’s not safe for trans people [in the U.S.], and change their policy,” she says. “But I suspect that one of us would have to get killed for that to change.
“Which one of us will get to be that person?”
because on journalistic integrity standards, some Newsweek articles are acceptable to use, but by political standards all Newsweek articles should not be shared - there is a moral reason to not drive traffic to a right-wing website and help them profit. Of course that’s not to say journalistic integrity doesn’t matter, just that it under-determines what is already established by other reasons.
My argument isn’t based on journalistic integrity as much as political aims, Newsweek is ideologically committed to right-wing politics and we should boycott them as a result.

In November 2022, the Southern Poverty Law Center reported that Newsweek had “taken a marked radical right turn by buoying extremists and promoting authoritarian leaders” since it hired conservative political activist Josh Hammer as editor-at-large. It noted the magazine’s elevation of conspiracy theorists, publication of conspiracy theories about COVID-19, views such as support for a ban on all legal immigration to the United States and denying adults access to trans-affirming medical care, and failure to disclose potential conflicts of interest in the content published on Hammer’s opinion section and podcast.
maybe don’t direct traffic to a conspiracy-peddling right-wing rag?

you get it exactly, this kind of meme, if anything, works against our political goals, by re-affirming conservatives in their mindset and alienating them by failing to provide a rhetorical “bridge” that allows them to see things differently
like you say, expecting them to respond as though they already agree with you (and as if you can just shame them into agreement) is entirely the wrong approach

you jest, but the defense of capital is a major reason for militarization of civil society - police in the US were originally slave catchers and private guards for the wealthy

I suspect a conservative might believe that the “gay lifestyle” kills people through AIDS, and probably believe trans people are groomed and their suicides are a result of that, so they might view LGBTQ+ rights as leading to deaths, if I had to guess

not sure how this is relevant, tbh …
maybe you mistakenly believe I think the left doesn’t use violence as a tool? How do you think slavery was abolished? How was the Magna Carta signed? How did we get the 40 hour work week? How did we get democracy? Bloodshed.
This isn’t related to our topic or your question, which is about whether the far-right uses violence to maintain purity.
No matter how much violence the left uses to give women the right to vote or to free slaves, it doesn’t justify the slaughter of Jews by the Nazis or other far right genocides.

^ and it’s nothing new, reactionaries have always preferred fantasy and power over reality and goodness.
Reactionaries are unknowingly self-harming, and their victimization fuels their faith and anger, which is redirected conveniently to scapegoats and political enemies.
Climate disasters lead to conspiracies about the government controlling the weather, rather than accountability for oil companies or action to stabilize the climate.
Poverty and economic hardship becomes hatred against immigrants and decadent elements of society (intellectuals, gays, trans, etc.), instead of bolstering workers movements and unions or translating into policies that improve outcomes.

yeah, the attempt to present fascism as a people’s libterating movement, as a kind of socialism, is nothing new - these are old rhetorical tricks, which makes it all the more disappointing they work still…

it’s literally in the intro summary on wikipedia:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Far-right_politics
Key to the far-right worldview is the notion of societal purity, often invoking ideas of a homogeneous “national” or “ethnic” community. This view generally promotes organicism, which perceives society as a unified, natural entity under threat from diversity or modern pluralism. Far-right movements frequently target perceived threats to their idealized community, whether ethnic, religious, or cultural, leading to anti-immigrant sentiments, welfare chauvinism, and, in extreme cases, political violence or oppression.
…
Far-right politics have led to oppression, political violence, forced assimilation, ethnic cleansing, and genocide against groups of people based on their supposed inferiority or their perceived threat to the native ethnic group, nation, state, national religion, dominant culture, or conservative social institutions.

What was the abolitionist John Brown if not far left?
What was Lenin if not far left (even if in the end he was opposed to those left of him, what was he before in power when Bolshevism was nothing but the left alternative to Menshevism)?
What were the suffragettes who in the early 20th century were bombing and burning down churches and government buildings if not far left?
What were the eight anarchists wrongfully sentenced to death for the Haymarket Affair if not far left?

came here to point this out
30 Lot and his two daughters left Zoar and settled in the mountains, for he was afraid to stay in Zoar. He and his two daughters lived in a cave. 31 One day the older daughter said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man around here to give us children—as is the custom all over the earth. 32 Let’s get our father to drink wine and then sleep with him and preserve our family line through our father.”
33 That night they got their father to drink wine, and the older daughter went in and slept with him. He was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.
34 The next day the older daughter said to the younger, “Last night I slept with my father. Let’s get him to drink wine again tonight, and you go in and sleep with him so we can preserve our family line through our father.” 35 So they got their father to drink wine that night also, and the younger daughter went in and slept with him. Again he was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.
36 So both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father. 37 The older daughter had a son, and she named him Moab[a]; he is the father of the Moabites of today. 38 The younger daughter also had a son, and she named him Ben-Ammi[b]; he is the father of the Ammonites[c] of today.
so yeah, not a king, and he was raped (not the rapist)
though he did offer his two daughters up to be raped to protect his guests (if that seems strange, the story is ultimately about the importance of hospitality, since back then, hospitality was more life or death):
3 But [Lot] insisted so strongly that they did go with him and entered his house. He prepared a meal for them, baking bread without yeast, and they ate. 4 Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom—both young and old—surrounded the house. 5 They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.”
6 Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him 7 and said, “No, my friends. Don’t do this wicked thing. 8 Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But don’t do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.”

yes, we already live in that world I think, programmers were always a bit loose on standards, so it makes sense it would slip to new lows. Not sure at what point there will be consequences catastrophic enough that regulations kick in and we start requiring minimal education like other trades (an engineer in any other field has to be licensed and educated, but in software we trust infrastructure to anyone, and there are no guard rails to prevent disaster, it’s all “self-regulated”).
I see people at work (whose backgrounds are as soldiers or line cooks, not computer science majors) using AI to do their jobs.
It’s incredible to me, how incapable the workers are, unable to think through basic problems on their own. We joked about people relying too much on Q&A sites like StackOverflow in the past, but this is an entirely new level of normalized incompetence.
but it’s our money, not his … taxes?
