21·11 months agoBraun was accused of “swinging an IV pole at a hospital nurse and threatening to kill her, screaming at a member of his synagogue, groping his family’s nanny and evading bridge tolls.”
Really buried the lede there. Evading bridge tolls is serious business.

4·11 months agoThat provides a social benefit - a fortune that isn’t being spent is like a loan to society.
Quite the opposite. If they were living off interest, their money would go towards people taking out loans, starting businesses, buying houses, and generating more wealth. That’s generally how it’s “supposed” to work.
Per the article, they’re accumulating wealth through stock appreciation and then borrowing money using the value of the stock as collateral. So they’re actually borrowing money that could go to other people. Meanwhile, a massive quantity of stock appreciating value doesn’t do anything for anyone.
All the while paying zero taxes.

311·1 year agoI live in Seattle, but am spending the week in Boston on vacation. It is interesting how different of a vibe American flags here. Boston already did this once to get the flag in the first place. They’re proud to wave it. More power to them.
In Seattle, American flags are either LGBT colors are torn to shreds on a flagpole bolted to a massive truck.

politics @lemmy.world•Police pinned Black man with knee on his back for 86 seconds before his death: report
5·1 year agoYou will die before you produce enough CO2 to detect.
You actually don’t even need to breathe to do this. If you hyperventilate to expel the CO2 from your blood then hold your breath, you will run out of oxygen before you build enough CO2 up to detect.

politics @lemmy.world•Police pinned Black man with knee on his back for 86 seconds before his death: report
279·1 year agoUhm. Ackshally, your body can’t detect a lack of oxygen. In a box with no oxygen, you’d likely just peacefully doze off before you (maybe) die.
What your body does detect is a build-up of carbon dioxide. So if you want to torture someone, prevent them from expelling CO2, or put them in a room full of it.
Edit: for those downvoting, OP is basically describing a Sarco Pod
