  • Pasty faced millennial here.

Also EE dropout (working on that).

I hope I am as enlightened and put together as you when I’m 50. Cheers.

But I do have one answer for you:

I lost hope for this nation when Trump was elected this last time. I couldn’t understand how people could not see the obvious.

    Facebook.

My ‘moment of clarity’ was when I saw a local news station running clips of college girls’ enthusiasm for Trump, just after the election. The sentiment was along the lines of “He’s so strong!” or “I really feel like he gets us, you know?” and almost directly quoting some meme’s I’d seen.

And seeing die hard libertarians I know swallow Trump’s accumulation of executive power, via their perception of events, drove it home.

…Walk the street, and look around. I’m using ‘Facebook’ as a catch-all here: algorithmic feeds and influencers are warping reality for smart folks, both ways. Every generation is caught up in it, but I feel the age extremes (Boomers and Z) are most vulnerable here.

  • And just to add to this, it’s something interesting about the right vs left I’ve noticed, at least in the US:

    • The “left” seems to expect ideological purity within their sect, but not political loyalty. They aren’t loyal to idols (with a few exceptions), but claws come out with the adjacent.

    • The “right” is the opposite; an agnostic great replacement theory fanatic will rub shoulders with evangelicals and immigrant tech bro, with no conflict. But absolute loyalty is expected, like the idea of being part of a “tribe” is explicit.

  • This is horrifying. Like, mind-bogglingly bad.

It’s also a blatant lie. Other countries are not testing nuclear weapons, they’re running simulations. We didn’t do that in the 60s because it wasn’t possible, but the US (and presumably China/Russia) literally have giant supercomputers for this purpose now.

…And we would know if they were doing real testing because it would show up on seismographs.

But who cares about truth? Or sanity? No, all my relatives (even scientifically minded ones) won’t even bat an eye, lest some Democrat steal their retirement, ugh.

  • LOT of The Guardian (click bait yeah, misinformation no), AP, Reuters, Al Jazeera and mocking the NY Times for sanewashing

I guess everyone has their different leanings, but I’m talking more about dailybeast, rawstory, literal tabloids that constantly hit the front page when sensationalist or sometimes flat out wrong headlines. There’s a reason Wikipedia avoids these.

Folks also spread twitter screenshots or memes that are easy to interpret as factual but are, in fact, completely fabricated. This is an example I’m thinking of: https://lemmy.world/post/36736401

And of course mods don’t care as long as it fits political orthodoxy, no matter how much its pointed out. I’ve even had Lemmy users express they ‘don’t care’ about the source quality, just that it matches their ideology. If the above was, say, a more tankie leaning meme, you can bet the mods would have zapped it instantly.

Lemmy has a lot of Anarchists and very true Left leaning people in general, which means knowing how to doubt everything corporate media puts out into the world.

Again, I’m skeptical of this, as it sure seems like tabloids are upvoted en masse as long as the title is juicy.

In other words, no one really seems to care about information hygiene unless its outside their bubble. Thats a recipe for spreading misinformation.
