Yeah OP calling it federal spending is inaccurate, but the mandatory or entitlement spending is taxed differently, right? Like social security was supposed to be our money that we’ve been paying in the whole time and that’s why it’s mandatory that it gets paid out when we retire.
Until republicans started fucking looting it under Reagan and Bush to pay for other shit, it was a self-sustaining system, and the fact that outflows are currently high is more a function of demographics than anything because boomers are retiring.
