help-circle

  • It might have been bizarre, but it was fucking original and mind-blowingly clever. Not the ruminated original stories, but something really new and exciting.

    spoilery mentions

Living ships made of biological matter?
Not detectable by the force and therefore a real threat to OP force adepts?
The masochistic nature of the Vong might have been a bit too much, but it was full of unique ideas that were usually interwoven really well.

I need to finish reading the series. I got about half way through.

  • For dipping your toes into a new topic I think it’s perfectly fine. It helps to provide useful pointers for further “research” (in a sense that would meet your requirement) and also manages to provide mostly accurate overviews. But sure, to really dive into this, LLMs like ChatGPT and co. are just some low-level assistants at best and one should go through the material themselves.

Scientific consensus. But it’s not “LLMs”. AI covers multitudes of methods, algorithms, models. LLMs fall into sequence modeling / prediction, usually based on transformers nowadays, which is a method from machine learning, which itself is a big branch inside of the term “AI”.

Life is not a race, nor a sequence of specific milestones everyone has to achieve. Do whatever the fuck you want for yourself in life.

That’s of course a bit difficult if these things are exactly what you want. However, go get therapy, carve something nice for you out of life and make yourself comfortable. Don’t compare yourself to people who have lived a mentally healthy life. It’s like comparing yourself to people who have healthy legs while yours are broken. They haven’t walked the same path you are walking. Maybe they wouldn’t even survive for so long if they were in your shoes. So forgive yourself and be proud that you are still here despite the shit raining down on you everyday. That’s a lot of strength you’re showing.

Yada yada yada, I know easier said than done. Ironic, coming from someone who has similar problems. But therapy has indeed helped to make things a bit better. Still working on it. There is hope. You can do it too.

(And still continue to shitpost. ;) )

  • This is not entirely true though. Beliefs and opinions are heavily influenced by a lot of factors. Even educated people are not free from such errors. Like the backfire effect (Nyhan and Reifler (2010)): situations where people become more entrenched in their views when confronted with contradictory evidence.

Other studies have found that when presented with data, individuals with more education can sometimes be more divided in their beliefs, particularly when the topic is politically charged. For instance, some educated individuals may use their knowledge to selectively interpret data in ways that support their pre-existing views, a phenomenon known as “motivated reasoning.” Confirmation bias relates to that. This has been observed in areas like climate change, where political and ideological factors heavily influence opinions. (See for example: https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.1704882114 )

In other words, no matter how educated or smart you are, you can still fall into ignorance and stubbornness. The key is to train your ability to think critically—especially when it comes to your own beliefs and opinions. Doing so can help you become more aware of biases and avoid common pitfalls in cognitive decision-making.

  • The level of your argumentation:
Are you a firefighter or a medical doctor? If not, you’re obviously in favour of fires, death and disease.
Why aren’t you donating all of your stuff to homeless people? Or are you happy all those people don’t have a home?
Why aren’t you saving the world already???

You know, demanding change and maybe showing some sort of protest does not mean you need to do those things exactly as you would like to see them, especially if those efforts wouldn’t change anything on the larger scale and rather lead to a bunch of problems in your life.

  • If we’re speaking of transformer models like ChatGPT, BERT or whatever: They don’t have memory at all.

The closest thing that resembles memory is the accepted length of the input sequence combined with the attention mechanism. (If left unmodified though, this will lead to a quadratic increase in computation time the longer that sequence becomes.) And since the attention weights are a learned property, it is in practise probable that earlier tokens of the input sequence get basically ignored the further they lie “in the past”, as they usually do not contribute much to the current context.

“In the past”: Transformers technically “see” the whole input sequence at once. But they are equipped with positional encoding which incorporates spatial and/or temporal ordering into the input sequence (e.g., position of words in a sentence). That way they can model sequential relationships as those found in natural language (sentences), videos, movement trajectories and other kinds of contextually coherent sequences.
