  • "In the middle of 1985, I got an invitation from Adnan Khashoggi, a Saudi Arabian and a billionaire at the time, to come to his apartment in Olympic Tower. I went, and while I didn’t particularly go for the apartment, I was impressed by the huge size of its rooms. Specifically, it had the biggest living room I’d ever seen. I had plenty of space in my triplex, but I figured, What the hell? Why shouldn’t I have exactly the apartment I wanted—particularly when I built the whole building?

I decided to take over one of the other apartments on the top three floors and combine it with mine. It has taken almost two years to renovate, but I don’t believe there is any apartment anywhere in the world that can touch it. And while I can’t honestly say I need an eighty-foot living room, I do get a kick out of having one."

    Guess who said that.

  • Right, once you have a global alliance that includes every nation there’s no reason for that alliance to exist. Or standing armies. Or nuclear submarines. You can’t ever let people get to the point where they start to question the need for mindless death instruments and the psychopaths who wield them.

On 21 December 1991, Boris Yeltsin, President of Russia, sent a letter to NATO asking it to consider accepting Russia as a member of the alliance sometime in the future. In the letter to NATO, Yeltsin stated, “This would contribute to an atmosphere of mutual understanding and trust and would strengthen stability and cooperation on the European continent. We regard this relationship as serious and wish to develop this dialog on all fronts, both on the political and military levels. Today we raise the issue of Russia’s membership in NATO, however, we see this as a long-term political goal”.

Then, a bunch of stuff happened and both sides realized it was advantageous to not have Russia in NATO. Turns out it’s easier to win elections when there’s a cold war going on. You can read about it here.

  • Competition is just as innate in humans as cooperation is. We don’t need to venerate one over the other, let alone embrace an economic ideology that doesn’t even acknowledge the other.

Take sport as a case study. There are both elements at play and nobody questions the need for both.

Or take a less friendly example like academia, where competition is nothing but a hindrance.

Markets should be an obvious case too.

Happy to expound if you need me to.

  • Let me add just how awful the park is. You have to drive there obviously, and the approach is laden with kitschy cowboy and old west themed tourist traps and overpriced hotels. Then you pay $20 for a parking space and get to gaze at the thing from a mile away. Exit through the gift shop where you can buy a plastic replica made in Shenzhen. Quintessentially American.

  • This is such a tired narrative. You guys really want to focus on the leftists when half the country voted for an authoritarian?

Every movement has its radical fringe. Virtue signaling either your ideological purity or your solidarity with the only viable opposition are equally feeble attempts at clinging to a notion of victory in the face of total defeat.

EDIT: I wasn’t expecting this comment to generate discussion but since it did, let me elaborate on what I meant by “total defeat.” The defeat is not an electoral loss, it’s the fact that we have relinquished so much political power that all we have left is voting for one of a set of compromised politicians every few years. It’s a tired argument because it assumes that it’s possible to vote our way out of the mess we’re in, and it simply isn’t. We need to attack the point of production because it’s where the ruling class derives its power. And arguing about our sham elections is getting us nowhere.
