That’s literally what I am talking about. It’s a pattern that goes back to before either of us were here, but that we feel and see as a result.

Even with FDR, he essentially gave the group that attempted a coupé/assassination a slap on the wrist rather than what they should have gotten. What does that have to do with this conversation? Any time some group or party does something heinous in this country they are given a pass to “maintain unity” or whatever going back to the civil war which just enables more of their bull shit.

I can understand if a person is against the death penalty for any reason. I’m mostly against it myself. However, at the barest minimum those who were part of the Confederacy should have been barred from holding public office of any kind or participating in anything that would influence public policy beyond maybe their right to vote

In a weird way autism may have partly spared me from a lot of mental trauma and issues. Growing up I went through a lot of things that tends to people having a lot of self doubt, anxiety, people pleasing tendencies, etc. I knew from a very young age though (maybe not as concretely as I do now) that what was happening to me wasn’t my fault. Like sure I knew I was a kid and that certain things about me were difficult, but it was very clear to me when the things adults did made no sense or were hypocritical. That’s not to say I didn’t end up with other issues like poor social skills, but that still seems a lot better than the previously mentioned options.

Also, I’m still wanting to know when I get all the taxes I paid back since we apparently aren’t ever supposed to be paying taxes.

I have always been baffled by the aesthetics argument. There is anther city I sometimes visit and the best part of the drive is this stretch of highway that goes on for several miles where you are flanked by windmills. There are hundreds in total and to me they are borderline awe inspiring. Absolutely gorgeous.

I’m sure you will be keeping me good company. The gains that the PVV and other right wing groups have made aren’t unique or a fluke. They are following the same playbook. Danger might be closer than you think.

She’s still doing better than better than most of the party. Would I like better? Sure. Bit I’d be pretty happy if she was the worst the party had to offer.

I don’t think anyone should have to engage with these people if they don’t want to, but something like 40%+ of the population are more or less OK with the way things are going. Humiliating someone, even if they had it coming and it’s entirely justified, tends to make them very defensive and double down on their position.

Is it fair? No. I hate it. They do not deserve grace in a lot of cases in my opinion, but when dealing with people and human nature I often find I have to decide between being right or being constructive. I am no saint. If the stakes only really involve myself, I’m probably more inclined to be a self-righteous sanctimonious jack wagon more often than not, but at these scales I think we need to be realistic. Acknowledge that it’s not fair we have to do this work, and then do it anyway.

You are allowed to record content like a broadcast though, which makes me wonder if that means that ripping is illegal, but piping it through a capture card isn’t?

Technically I’m half right and half wrong (I think). It’s not illegal to backup media that one owns, but it is illegal to break DRM/copy protection which is required to rip most physical media these days.

Suffice to say the legality of it is a cluster fuck, but the morality, in my opinion, is pretty clear. Fuck the corpos.

That has been my position all along. I think the best thing long term is if shit gets real bad really quickly. The slower the decent the longer the suffering will be overall, and the less people are likely to notice and remember.

Right, but two things to keep in mind.

If the same amount of money was poured into public transit we could probably get that travel time down.

Is commute time the only thing that matters and should it be given priority?

For example, if someone told you that taking their helicopter was a three times shorter commute than taking their car to work what would you think of that? I know you indicated that your car cost very little to buy and operate, but their are a number of costs with that car that are being externalized. The roads that it drives on, the pollution it produces, the space/parking it takes up when it’s not being driven, etc.

If public transit were almost as good (doesn’t have to beat it) as individuals driving, how much more space would we have for additional housing, public spaces, or other amenities?

If you take all of this those externalized factors into account and decide that commute time still trumps the other advantages then that’s where you are at and I understand. I don’t agree, but I do understand.

I personally LOVE driving, but hate commuting. Fun car on twisty back roads? Yes please. Sitting in traffic or even moving along at a decent pace on the highway but need to be hyper aware of everyone around me? Much less enjoyable. I personally would have no issue with a longer commute on public transit if I could read a book or play games while I did it.

The thing is, how much do we collectively spend on cars, infrastructure, and roads only for most cars to sit doing nothing 90% of the time? I don’t have specific numbers but it seems to me like if all of that money was spent on public transit then it would still be cheaper to have a tram coming by every five to ten minutes even in suburban areas with low passenger volume.

I don’t think it’s ever going to happen though given the lack of public desire and vested interests at play though.
