He knows his time is short and is desperate to find a loophole to immortality either through science or religion. His energy has been dropping precipitously and his ramblings are more incoherent than usual.

This could all just be wishful thinking on my part though. His death through natural causes may be a way out of this nightmare, or at least slow things down enough for a chance at recovery.

I think the cult just likes that he allows them to be their worst selves. After being told for years that they are bad for being racist, sexist bigots finally some powerful person who is all those things becomes president and so they feel justified in being the awful humans they are.
