When Johan went to visit him in prison, the brothers were seized by the mob, dragged out of the building, and lynched. The violence was extreme: the brothers were beaten, mutilated, and their bodies were hung in public.
In a shocking and grotesque turn, some members of the mob reportedly cannibalized parts of their bodies, consuming them as a symbolic act of hatred and revenge.
Oof. That’s how you know you’ve fucked up.
What I love about recent gaming news is how indie devs are getting the glory they deserve, and AAA live service slop is being rejected like it deserves.
What I don’t love about it is that the only people getting punished are people who actually work on games.

711·9 months agoI forgot about pedobear.
I would like to re-forget about pedobear.
I’m not saying it’s bad.
But “this is real leadership” is more fanfare than I think it deserves.
Jon Stewart lobbying for health benefits for veterans exposed to burn pits was a concrete action that got a bill passed and expanded health benefits for veterans.
I’m not going to squee “this is real leadership” at a former president taking zero political risk by giving out handshakes and back slaps on the day when that’s basically the bare minimum expectation.
I think it’s fair to think “real leadership” should mean more when you’re talking about a former president.
Only if you compare it to the other guy snoring in a chair.
I mean, I’m glad you showed up (with a camera crew), but I wouldn’t call that capital-L leadership.
If, by GOP base, you mean working class white Americans, I don’t think they’re actually afraid.
Otherwise, they wouldn’t constantly be taking away all the structural supports keeping them somewhat healthy or giving them opportunities to improve their lives.
If, by GOP base, you mean corporations and the billionaire class.
Then… yea, you’re right.

6·10 months agoIs there an article or a video that ELI5s this in context?
Because what the court said was:
A business corporation is organized and carried on primarily for the profit of the stockholders. The powers of the directors are to be employed for that end. The discretion of directors is to be exercised in the choice of means to attain that end and does not extend to a change in the end itself, to the reduction of profits or to the nondistribution of profits among stockholders in order to devote them to other purposes.
And I am not even remotely fluent in legalese.
This, without the taxes. Just put me on a mountain where no one’s going to bother me and my sheep.

39·11 months agoSource for the quote: What I’d Say to the Martians by Jack Handey
The way Tolstoy uses the word aligns with the negative, exclusive definition of the word:
and not the positive sense of the word:
That makes sense, because he didn’t have access to the word nationalism as a means to distinguish between the two. The word “nationalism” doesn’t appear a single time in Patriotism and Government or in Patriotism, or Peace?.
And that makes sense. The word nationalism didn’t see common usage until well after he published that piece (in 1900).
We’re not “inventing” good patriotism now, because it was already “invented” over the course of the past 100 years.
We now have access to both words, allowing us to distinguish between the positive and negative aspects of that love.
Leo Tolstoy’s writing is timeless in a lot of ways, but when we’re talking about terms, it’s important to take into account what those terms meant when they were used.
