politics @lemmy.world•Aficionados fret as Trump moves to make pasta great again
21·10 months agoWow, you really don’t know anything about supply and infrastructure, do you? Dude, this is, like, econ 101. I’m sorry you got such a poor education; you should probably get your money back from whatever school you went to.
Think about it. Do you really think that the pasta companies in the US have entire production lines and factories sitting idle? Or that they only run for a few hours a day and then everyone goes home? Of course not. They’re running at capacity for as long as they can every day. They don’t have the ability to ramp up pasta production.
To increase pasta production in the US, those companies would have to either expand their current facilities, or build new ones. And despite what idiotic talking conservative heads seem to think, it is physically impossible for that to happen with the snap of a finger.
Take it from someone whose company is working on upgrading a current facility. Not expanding, mind you; just upgrading. The permitting process alone took us two years. Construction itself will be at least a year and a half. So that’s 3-4 years to build/expand a new factory, maybe more.
That means you’re looking at 3-4 years at a minimum before those US companies can replace the pasta that’s not in our economy anymore. Which means for 3 years or more most Americans won’t be able to afford (or even acquire in the first place) what is a staple food, especially for poor families. That’s what your initial comment boiled down to: starving the poor in the hopes that it might get better eventually.
And all of this is assuming the companies have the money to do all this in the first place. Even upgrades aren’t cheap; a whole-ass new building is crazy expensive. Not every company has that kind of cash, and if the banks aren’t convinced it’ll be a good return on their investment, then getting a loan for it isn’t happening either. Which delays things further as fewer companies will be able to build to meet demand.

51·10 months agoYou know, you could have just kept your thoughts to yourself, and then no-one would ever know you have no idea how markets and supply work, or how much effort and cost actually go into making pasta at home.
Was there any particular reason you wanted to put your ignorance on display?

politics @lemmy.world•Newsom says Trump is ‘rigging the election’ with federal poll monitors
4·10 months agoI mean, they’re not, if you actually pay attention to politics. One group are actual racist shithead Nazis, for one thing.
But the other group are apologists for the Nazis, as long as the nazi’s donors give them money too, anyhow. Because they’re rich and white, so who cares about consequences right?
The issue is that looks close enough that people who don’t pay attention to politics (and let’s be real, that’s most people) just… don’t care. We see it, but the news makes sure they don’t, and even in the case of Faux News feeds them an alternate reality narrative.

politics @lemmy.world•Newsom says Trump is ‘rigging the election’ with federal poll monitors
7·10 months agoThe big issue isn’t just the Republicans, really; it’s how the Democrat leadership shuts down anyone who isn’t pro-Israel and pro-rich-donor. They’re so old-boys-club that they’re totally out of touch with voters.
And so people see one Nazi-party and one reach-across-the-isle cooperate-with-the-Nazi-party and just… walk away.
I mean, Schumer’s said flat out his only job is making sure the Democrats support Israel. And all the rest of the leadership talks about is how they don’t seem to be getting support… so they should quit supporting trans rights and stuff, and go court republicans.
It’s fucking infuriating. And Newsom is just cut from that same insipid cloth.

Or AoC
Or even Walz, at least he knew to call a spade a spade and a weirdo a weirdo (until his own party muzzled him).
If we get Newsom it’ll just be more of the same hooray-for-rich-donors-to-hell-with-the-rest-of-you let’s-head-over-and-court-the-far-right bullshit the Democrats have been doing for decades and I’m fucking sick of it. We need a president and congress that sits for the people, not just the people that bribe them.

Most people with sense are going to disagree with a stupid opinion.
If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and swims like a duck, we call it a duck, whether it’s native to Europe or America.
And, let’s be real here while we’re at it nitpicking statements, it’s most definitely not just a ‘minority’ of republicans anymore.

3·11 months agoYeah, it’s the same thing as all those articles that came out when that Joker movie did about how there was always the chance that people seeing the movie would be moved to random a acts of violence, and oh wouldn’t that be terrible, and maybe people shouldn’t watch the movie because what if that happened…
Honestly it’s laughable how transparent they were being in trying to encourage violence in order for them to have a real reason to ban the movie.

politics @lemmy.world•Hegseth’s “Urgent” Military Meeting Is for Dumbest Reason Imaginable
97·11 months agoThe military is a machine, not a person. You point, click, and tell them what to shoot. That’s it. They don’t do political policy.
And really, that’s a good thing if you think about it. Like it or not, Trump and his flunkies are in the White House because the majority of voters put them there, so when you get down to it, it’s the majority’s job to get rid of him if they don’t like him.
I mean, do you really want the military to go, ‘hey, we know y’all elected this guy, but we don’t like him, so we’re going to just get rid of him’? Just because they’d be getting rid of a guy we don’t like this time doesn’t make it a good thing.
