You know how the universe isn’t broken? Well it’s possible it could break and you can’t predict or stop it.
A slightly higher level explanation is that the universe might be in this state which is like a ball sitting in a little divot on the side of a hill, and if something bumps it out of that divot it could roll to the bottom. If that ball rolls to the bottom then it could cause particles to stop behaving the way we expect them to so things like chemistry and life stop being possible.

Political Memes@lemmy.world•Liberalism vs. Leftism
20·2 years agoIt’s always funny when people say this can’t work, when it constantly works better than any current hierarchical structure. All the collectives I’m in work great, and there are tons of worker owned co-ops going strong, one of my activist groups will often go for meals at one after a day of protesting.
Just because you can’t imagine something different doesn’t mean it can’t work. It’s not just a mess of everyone trying to dominate each other, it’s cooperative and there are simple processes to facilitate it. It’s possible to run countries this way.
Hierarchies exist to exploit and abuse.
It took me way to long to realise that wasn’t Bill Nye…

Political Memes@lemmy.world•Far left intellectualism
101·2 years agoI think this has gone beyond my point so I’ll just state that I don’t have any issue with requiring civility, I didn’t intend to imply anything like that or to take issue with moderation in general, sorry.
I specifically take issue with moderation that minimises and denies an issue that I’m extremely passionate about, but that’s it.
I don’t disagree with your points on the socialist instances, I’m not a socialist and I’m not on those instances, mine is even defederated from hexbear.
My intention was just to point out that the conversation around this issue has, in my experience, been largely a case of ad hominem (as this post literally is) rather than any well meaning good faith discussion.

87·2 years agoNo, I said it’s their fault for not getting elected, that’s all. I didn’t say anything about the democrats failing to do some policy thing…

127·2 years agoI don’t recall commenting on the behaviour of any of those users, I was trying to say that the “attack the ideas” line is basically ignored when .world users try to engage with leftists, I never said the socialists were perfect either, forgive me if I implied as much.
And yes, I do have a problem with mods using their power to suppress dissenting opinions in order to deny genocide, I think that’s an entirely reasonable position for me to take.

1820·2 years agoI really don’t get how people see shit like libs saying you have to vote for Harris or you’ll get what’s coming to you when Trump comes to power, as anything but voter intimidation.
If the Dems lose the election then that’s squarely on them for not having good policy, it’s up to them to win voters. How can you look upon someone rejecting genocide and hate them for it? How is that position so hard to understand?
For what it’s worth I think people should vote Harris but I can’t fault anyone for refusing to do so.
Imagine willingly posting pro-imperialist propaganda and thinking that makes you morally superior…

1910·2 years agoIt’s funny you say that, because almost every rebuttal I see from .world users is just ad hominem and refusing to engage with the extremely valid criticism.
You can disagree about voting strategy all you want, but denial of genocide is fucked up and pretending democrats are anything but enthusiastic supporters is literally a dismissal of objective reality.

Political Memes@lemmy.world•Protests Are Threats Actually
5·2 years agoThe problem with this, is that many use it to justify their own inaction and direct benefit from problematic things. It honestly doesn’t matter if you don’t organise, you should have basic goddamn morals and not enrich your life at the expense of others.

Programmer Humor@lemmy.ml•My favourite type of self-care
9·2 years agoWe waste the two hours doing code reviews that only three people actually need to be present for, I always appreciate the chance to zone out and do something else for a big part of the day. Follow that with lunch and I’ve just done half a day’s work by watching TV
Yeah exactly right? I’ve had Americans tell me that snakes and spiders are too scary, snakes will actively run from people (mostly) and spiders don’t care about you they just want flies and stuff.
Meanwhile in NA you’ve got powerful prey species that will just randomly wander through town, not to mention all the gun violence in the USA…
Most dangerous thing here are the cars tbh.
I really really hate this narrative. Time and time again people tell me they would love to come to Australia but it’s too dangerous.
This isn’t a dangerous place, most of our wildlife is harmless and/or actively avoids people. It makes me so damn sad every time another friend tells me how deadly my home is, and even worse they refuse to listen to people who actually live here because they’ve been told Australia is dangerous their whole life.
The only thing that keeps me sane while working for capitalists is that I get paid to do a lot of nothing

Political Memes@lemmy.world•It's okay, tankies love fascism, so they're not put out by the result
1·2 years agoI appreciate it. I’m not here to debate you and I have no reason to lie about not having seen anything else, though I’m honestly a bit hurt that you think that, but I guess you’ve been nothing but attacked so far so perhaps it’s understandable.

1·2 years agoNot interested in the whole yelling at each other thing, so genuinely asking here. What exactly does not voting democrat get the left in the US? Is the OP’s assumption that you want to accelerate fascism actually correct?
So far I haven’t seen any reason other than either accelerationism or “because it makes me feel bad” and I refuse to believe that’s all that’s behind it.
I’m really having a hard time, and I genuinely think it’s important to try to understand the points of view and beliefs of those we disagree with, rather than immediately turning to infighting.

Got any recommendations for a music player?
I’ve paid for symfonium and love it tbh, it works really well, has great customizability and the offlining of favourited albums is so so nice. It has an internal download cache, but it can also export files to your downloads folder the way jellyfin does at the moment. My only gripe is that it’s not FOSS.
