But yeah, playing Persona 5 gave me quite a bit of culture shock. It opens with a gym teacher who actively molests female students, and it being considered normal with everyone knowing about it; because “The students were into it, why wouldn’t they be? He’s a famous ex-olympic athlete.”

I thought it was bad writing, but then I looked into it and learned not only the “13 was the AOC” thing but also that… Student-Teacher relationships were considered pretty normal in Japan. The player character in Persona 5 can actually get into one with his home room teacher should the player choose.

For the record, even in American states with a 16 year old AOC a teacher dating a student is considered highly illegal and requires a lifetime Sex Offender Registry.

So yeah definite culture shock, and definitely disgusting.
