A dying SD card also killed my Pihole. That was the day (night) I stopped using Raspberry and moved everything to a Docker container running on my home server which is a laptop (built-in power backup).

I hope my server SSD is more stable than an SD card. Backups are still important - let’s not forget.

I use a retired business laptop. 16GB RAM and Linux, mapped some shares from my NAS. Low power high performance.

Nextcloud is my nemesis.

It took me ages to even get it running at all. Maybe it’s more complicated as a Docker container, I don’t know, but it needs to run alongside manyther selfhosted services.

And once I finally got it working, it was slow as molasses even on LAN, nevermind access from outside. I never started using it.

What do people think of the Samsung Galaxy Smart Tag 2? It’s basically the same thing as the Apple tag, minus the apple.

I just run it all on a retired laptop. Low power, quiet, plenty of performance. With a NAS next to it, even storage is no issue.

What I don’t understand is that “the media” is staffed by ordinary people that are suffering as much as everyone else. Placing the wire is not that much work in the first place, and then some minor adjustments in the first few days or weeks to get around corners better. Easy.

My old DS916+ is great at the ile services but too weak for computing, so I have a reclaimed business laptop for the services. I could not imagine running anything on the DS.

Neither my UniFi router/gateway nor the ISP modem offers that.

Between my network and the ISP modem, I habe a UniFi router. That’s the one I tell to send DNS requests to Pihole.

The only way to get around that is by setting e.g. 1.1.1.1 into the local computer’s network settings. My boys aren’t that tech literate - yet.
