Cecil Houston, the manager of the KSC office of the Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama, set up a three-way conference call with Morton Thiokol in Utah and the KSC in Florida on the evening of January 27 to discuss the safety of the launch.

Morton Thiokol engineers expressed their concerns about the effect of low temperatures on the resilience of the rubber O-rings. As the colder temperatures lowered the elasticity of the rubber O-rings, the engineers feared that the O-rings would not be extruded to form a seal at the time of launch. The engineers argued that they did not have enough data to determine whether the O-rings would seal at temperatures colder than 53 °F (12 °C), the coldest launch of the Space Shuttle to date.  During this discussion, Lawrence Mulloy, the NASA SRB project manager, said that he did not accept the analysis behind this decision, and demanded to know if Morton Thiokol expected him to wait until April for warmer temperatures.  Morton Thiokol employees Robert Lund, the Vice President of Engineering, and Joe Kilminster, the Vice President of the Space Booster Programs, recommended against launching until the temperature was above 53 °F (12 °C).

When the teleconference prepared to hold a recess to allow for private discussion amongst Morton Thiokol management, Allan J. McDonald, Morton Thiokol’s Director of the Space Shuttle SRM Project who was sitting at the KSC end of the call,  reminded his colleagues in Utah to examine the interaction between delays in the primary O-rings sealing relative to the ability of the secondary O-rings to provide redundant backup, believing this would add enough to the engineering analysis to get Mulloy to stop accusing the engineers of using inconclusive evidence to try and delay the launch.  When the call resumed, Morton Thiokol leadership had changed their opinion and stated that the evidence presented on the failure of the O-rings was inconclusive and that there was a substantial margin in the event of a failure or erosion. They stated that their decision was to proceed with the launch.

When McDonald told Mulloy that, as the onsite representative at KSC he would not sign off on the decision, Mulloy demanded that Morton Thiokol provide a signed recommendation to launch; Kilminster confirmed that he would sign it and fax it from Utah immediately, and the teleconference ended.  Mulloy called Arnold Aldrich, the NASA Mission Management Team Leader, to discuss the launch decision and weather concerns, but did not mention the O-ring discussion; the two agreed to proceed with the launch.

Dunno about you, but it sounds a lot like NASA, especially Lawrence Mulloy, practically twisted Morton Thiokol’s arms until one of them (Joe Kilminster) relented and signed off on the launch. Mulloy even lied by omission at the end there to get his way. I wonder how he could sleep at night after this stunt.

  • The issue was that they knew there were issues with the shuttle and had been warned by several engineers about launching in the cold weather they were having at the time, but NASA ignored them and sent the Challenger on its way anyways. It’s been awhile so I forget the details of exactly what it was that was wrong, but I think it was the metal in some screws that wasn’t able to deal with the differences in temperatures and the engineers said shit would go wrong if they didn’t replace them and nobody listened. It was a very preventable disaster that only happened due to laziness and impatience on NASA’s part.

    • it was the rubber in the O-ring seals that couldn’t handle the differences in temperature.

  • I mean, some people were definitely like that, but I also just saw a lot of people who clearly didn’t understand the concept of the mask. I can only speak for my own country of course, but over here the nay sayers were a very small, yet loud minority, while the vast majority of people did their best to wear the masks. Most of them just hadn’t recieved proper instructions on how to use it.

I was lucky that we have a family member who is a nurse, so in our household, we know how to use the masks correctly, and let me tell you - fucking nobody used the masks correctly. Not even the most vehement mask users who talked about the importance of masks did it correctly. I was shown how to do it by a professional and even I did it wrong multiple times because you just kinda forget when you’re busy, on the go or tired af after a long day, that you are under no circumstances supposed to touch the mask itself. The second you do, you have compromised the effect of the mask and you have contaminated your fingers.

Do you know how many times a day I saw people adjust their masks with their fingers, scratching their face underneath the mask, securing the mask over the nose, reusing the same mask over and over and not disinfect their hands at any point, but scratching and then pick items up at the store and put them down again?

I did it myself. A single mindless moment and you have compromised the effect of the mask. And don’t get me started on the well-meaning souls who decided to sow masks without a clue about filters or anything like that.

This is something I just couldn’t talk with people about during corona because everybody were fucking hysterical about covid. The smallest attempt to have a discussion was seen as suddenly I was an anti vaxxer and a conspiracy theorist, when all I ever said was that I didn’t think the masks worked as well as people thought they did. They definitely had a positive effect on stopping the spreading cobbled with the distancing and the washing of hands. All of that contributed positively to it. But my god. I couldn’t deal with people bearly wearing their masks properly (under the nose or even under the fucking chin, my dude) or reusing the same mask over and over. I knew most people didn’t do it on purpose, but it really grinded my friggin gears to see them whenever I was out shopping groceries. Especially early on when we still didn’t know how dangerous covid was and I was being super anal about using the masks correctly and super paranoid about catching it and passing it on to someone with a weak immune system. And then you walk past some old person with the mask under the nose one minute and a group of teens having the mask hanging around their chin for later use the next. I had colleagues who kept used masks in their pockets and pulled them out for a quick use whenever they had to run errands. Then back in the pocket it went.

But what can you do? People were just trying to live their lives and adjust to the changes and most of them did the best they could even if they completely missed the point of the masks. And I mean, you just can’t expect anyone to use the masks the way medical personal do. Especially not out in the wild where life is messy. So in that sense I kinda learned to let it go, but I still have this nam-like flashback everytime I see someone with a mask underneath their nose.

Haven’t seen that shit for so long and when I saw that picture I was back in the jungle, lol.

Oh same. I stayed up all night during the 2016 election and when Trump won I was laughing hysterically because I couldn’t believe what I was seeing and hearing.

My sweet, lovely and amazing boyfriend told me during this election that Harris would win because the Americans wouldn’t put up with the abortion stuff and I just told him that I thought he was overestimating the American population. He’s always thought my hatred for America was too unnuanced and unfair, but I mean… I have been right so far. Which isn’t really the win I was hoping for. I was actually hoping to be proven wrong at least once in my fucking lifetime, but eh.

Disclaimer: no, I don’t hate all American people. I know most Americans are chill. I just despise the me-me-me culture and how the system is built to screw the little guy over and reward the über rich 1%. The people deserve better. So so much better.

For real. To me, Trump is the embodiment of the American stereotype. I know Americans think that the rest of the world stereotype them as being fat, but no no no. The behavior Trump exhibits is the American stereotype on crack. I am pretty anti America (sorry, not sorry) and have been since Bush, but even I could not have come up with a more cartoony and offensive American stereotype than the Trump persona.

US politics is a fucking comedy. My colleague pulled up the picture of Trump standing with that goofy tariff board where trump is reading all the countries and how many percentages they would be tariffed. My colleague was absolutely cackling at the picture and kept saying “the supposedly richest country in the world and they announce this shit that will affect all of us on a piece of fucking cardboard!!!” 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂

  • Denmark = the flawed boyfriend who knows he’s been letting her down and is trying to fix it.

Greenland = the pretty girl who is tired of her boyfriend’s behavior, but wants to make it work because he is trying to improve.

America = the nice guy incel who who used to be Denmark’s best friend and thinks he has a chance with the girl.

America doesn’t understand that Greenland isn’t interested. America doesn’t understand that Greenland isn’t her boyfriend’s property. America doesn’t understand that Greenland is her own woman with her own hopes and dreams. She’s nothing more than a pretty girl he wants to boost his ego. She keeps telling him that she’s trying to work it out with her boyfriend and even if they decide to break up she still doesn’t want to be with America.

America = that’s just your boyfriend talking. I know you want me.

Proceeds to harrass and stalk her wherever she goes with unwanted advances and ignores her rejections. Makes alphamale threats toward Denmark who is just standing there like “please respect my girlfriend’s boundaries.”

Tune in next time when we find out if America decides to cross over from stalking and threats to rape and murder or if he finally accepts the rejection.

  • Honestly, and I may be wrong, I think Thiel is the one who owns everybody. Musk is nothing more than the court jester and he is too narcissistic and stupid to realize how he’s as much of a puppet as trump is. Maybe even more so. Thiel is really scary because he’s actually smart enough to know how to play the game and keep a semi low profile. I think he’s happy Musk steals the show.

It may be a conspiracy and I want to wait and see before I commit to it, but there has been some talk about how Thiel’s end goal is to destroy old civilization and create techno states where people like him are the overlords who have complete control and freedom to do as they please without any legislations and restrictions getting in their way. He has been talking about this since 2009, maybe even further back, of how he wants his own techno state that is separate from the laws of the rest of the world.

It sounds so fucking insane to me that I haven’t really talked to anyone about it in case I’m just falling for some crazy conspiracy shit, but looking at what they have been doing since trump got into office, it certainly looks like they are in the process of actively and knowingly dismantling and destroying America. Musk said as much: that they were going to tear down and rebuild the nation. But fuck it if I know what the true end goal is. It might as well be a bunch of rich boys who have collectively lost their minds and think they are living in a cool action movie and are too stupid to understand what they are doing.
