I have self hosted my email since 2006. I gave up on self hosting outgoing mail in 2021, but I still keep the server up for incoming mail, and still set up throwaway accounts on there.

The hard part of hosting email is getting Google and Microsoft to accept outgoing mail. Tons of businesses that do not have visibly outlook .com or gmail .com addresses are still hosted by those servers.

I had SPF, DKIM, and a static datacenter IP address with no reputation problems. I still couldn’t get through to Microsoft, not even in people’s junk mail directory, until they manually whitelisted my address. Microsoft didn’t allow them to whitelist a whole domain. Google was a little easier, but they added new demands monthly.

Not sure how much you’re paying for your VPN, but a virtual private server can be had for about $5 per month. You’ll get a real IPv4 address just for you, so you won’t have to use non-standard port numbers. (You can also use the VPS as a self-hosted VPN or proxy.)

$5 per month doesn’t get you much processing power, but it gets you plenty of bandwidth. You could self-host your server on your home computer, and reverse-proxy through your NAT using the VPS.

Cloudflare has IP banned me before for no reason (no proxy, no VPN, residential ISP with no bot traffic). They’ve switched their captcha system a few times, and some years it’s easy, some years it’s impossible.

In 2016, I voted for Stein to send a message to Clinton, saying “You could have won if you were a better candidate. Here’s a person willing to spend the effort to go to the polling booth, but would rather vote for a candidate with no chance of winning than vote for you.”

I feel like the US is more like a Second World country. By “Second World”, I mean the countries that are more aligned to Russia than to NATO. That description now fits the US, unfortunately.

I think people are more pissed off and divided than they have been in a very long time. It’s hard to say how close we are to a civil war, though. There’s been a lot of propaganda for a long time saying “violence is not the answer” (even though sometimes it is), and “violence has no place in our system of government” (even though the government abuses its own monopoly on violence to imprison and kill innocent, peaceful people).

It feels like the media in the US is less reliable than it’s ever been in my lifetime, and would probably suppress as much as possible any information that would support open rebellion.

It used to ask. I haven’t tried in years. Maybe it only asks if you also create a gmail email address with your account.

First, I don’t like Google’s terms.

Second, if I try to create an account using a different email address, it usually complains that I don’t have a real phone number, or every phone number I have or can borrow has been used too many times to create a Google account (I’ve never made one, but I’ve lent my number to a graphic designer who needed multiple accounts), or it blocks me at the Recaptcha (“Your computer is sending automated queries”).

For my current main email address, there is already an account created for it, which I did not make. This account was “suspended” as of the moment I first knew about it, with no reason given. Google said it would be automatically deleted if not signed into for several months. For a while, it seemed deleted. A year later, another implicit Google account was created in my name, and suspended immediately.

Each time, I learn about the mystery account because when I try to send email to any Gmail user I get a bounce message from mailer-daemon@googlemail.com stating “The account limonene@example.example is disabled”. Using Google’s forgot-password system, I get confirmation that the account exists, and is suspended.

It’s kind of a big problem, because tons of people use googlemail.com servers to handle their email, even if the nominal domain isn’t gmail.com. When I opted out of Discord’s change in terms, that bounced with the same error message from mailer-daemon@googlemail.com. Contacting Sparkfun’s tech support to tell them I can’t order from them because of Recaptcha, I also got the same bounce message.

What they want is: to reduce the trade deficit. But they don’t know how to do that. The most straightforward way is to produce more American products that people in other countries want. But how can Japan do that for them?
