7·10 months agoHow do you decide which open source projects are worthy of taxpayer money, and how much does a given project get?
I have a couple projects I’ve put up in GitHub as open source. Would they qualify? Or are you just talking about well known open source projects like Linux?

politics @lemmy.world•Marjorie Taylor Greene introduces bill to end H-1B visas days after Trump backs the program: ‘Americans first’English
5·10 months agoThose sound like the sorts of issues that could easily be addressed by well thought out legislation. I have a nephew that recently got a digital nomad visa so that he could work for his US employer while traveling around Europe. Some of those countries require you to prove you have health insurance or buy insurance from their national health network. Those countries also regulations regarding taxes, etc. that the visa holder is responsible for.
So Canada should pass laws to close the loopholes you describe. They would need regulations similar to digital nomads that apply to foreign exchange students etc.

4·11 months agoHow would the individual be protected from the IRS if they are penalized by the IRS for non-payment of taxes. Just because you sent a check to some state entity doesn’t mean those federal taxes have been paid, and that state entity likely wouldn’t have the authority or resources to protect you from the IRS.
It would be kind of like sending your mortgage payment to your lawyer when you have a dispute with your bank. You still owe that money to the bank, and they can take action for non-payment.

2·11 months agoTangentially related: if you have an EV and charge at home then National Grid now has a program to credit you when you charge during off-peak hours. It’s a bit convoluted and only works with certain WiFi enabled EV chargers, but its saved us around $10 a month since we signed up.

2·1 year agoSo glad to hear this. Had Insteon in my old house and moved when they shut down, so I’m mostly using eave now in the new house. I loved Insteon, and kept my hub & plug in modules when we moved. I’ll definitely consider using them again going forward.

154·1 year agoSo 0.00001% of the annual military budget…
Last year I heard a talk by retired Admiral Stravidis, who among other things was supreme commander of NATO for a few years. He pointed out that by the time somebody makes the rank of General or Admiral they will have sworn that oath a bunch of times. They renew that oath each time they are promoted etc. They also would have administered that oath to countless other soldiers & sailors over the years.
Fire all the generals and admirals, and guess what? They are replaced by junior officers who have repeated the oath to the US Constitution almost as many times. There’s always the chance that some may decide to bend the knee to Trump, but there are significantly more that likely won’t.

Good. The more the Republican voting block is fractured the better.
