  • Avocado toast is one of the many things disingenuous conservative media has used to blame millennials for the economic situation we grew up in. “They wouldn’t be in such poor financial situation if they stopped paying $15 for avocado toast at brunch every day”

That being said… avocado toast rocks and that is an opinion shared by all of my friends of my age lol. Personally I like mine with a fried egg and hot sauce

  • I grew up near a Thai Buddhist temple in the panhandle of Florida, and it was about the same. They did a charity cookout type thing every weekend, which was open to the public and they did a bunch of cultural and religious ceremonies right next to or right there in the little marketplace they set up for the cookout. It was a great way to kill a few hours on a sunday; $5 or $6 for a plate of pad thai and a skewer of thai bbq pork, see some cool ceremonies, sometimes end up talking with somebody from the temple for a bit. Absolutely blew my mind that a religious gathering could be so actively enjoyable after I grew up going to mass

  • Im glad somebody is fighting trump, but good lord i do not want California to become the blueprint for America. Driving along the PCH from avocado farms in Oxnard to Malibu and seeing the sick fucking filth that is the California wealthy right next to the migrant workers they exploit is in my top 5 “most disturbing things ive ever experienced.” That is taking into account that I used to work on strategic bombers and I know in gruesome detail what a 2000 lb bomb does to a human body. Newsom is a bitter poison pill whose voting record shows that he basically agrees with Trump across the board, and his imitation of trump is barely even ironic. He’s always imitated trump in terms of policy.

  • There’s a huge difference between being progressive to attract women and being progressive and noticing that some women find that attractive. I’m glad you were able to work out/are working on your demons. I don’t appreciate being accused of the same based on a comment that only relates to your situation if you make significant assumptions.

  • Sure, if you’re a TERF and believe that validating trans people is violence against women. Giving you the benefit of the doubt that you probably don’t recognize that as a TERF talking point, I’d advise you to be more careful about where you source your facts lest you end up accidentally spewing hate. If you are a TERF, I’d advise you that trans rights are human rights and you should stop being a bigot.

  • I wouldn’t even give it that. Imo “intellectual capacity” is entirely a confidence thing. If you have the confidence to give an answer that may be incorrect, you have intellectual capacity. If you give an answer and it’s wrong, you’re learning. If doing that and being wrong over and over again a million times doesn’t discourage you, somebody is probably about to hand you a degree. “Intellectual capacity” is a fairy tale for the privileged to ensure they aren’t discouraged from pursuing an education, and a source of learned helplessness for most others.

  • My personal take is that iq is effectively meaningless. Measuring intelligence is a problem that is extremely hard, maybe even impossible given that what constitutes “intelligence” can be subjective. Some people ascribe value to it iq because it’s an extreme oversimplification of a problem they don’t want to think to hard about, and as a bonus it creates another hierarchy in which they can baselessly feel superior to others.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intelligence_quotient#Validity_as_a_measure_of_intelligence

has a pretty good summary of scholarly debate on that question.

TLDR: iq has an extremely narrow take on what “intelligence” means, and ignores the vast wealth of what people consider to be human intelligence. For that reason most scholars think it’s nonsense.

  • The loss of trust is real. I was a phd student doing computer science until this year; my school kowtowing to fascists was the last straw for me. I will have nothing to do with these fucking government contractors who get cheap labor by pretending to also be places of education, as if working a dhs grant for 4 years on a $29k stipend is anything other than illegal sub-minimum wage labor. I’ve come to the realization that getting a phd is nothing more than a measure of how much you will prostrate yourself to an abusive system; it has little to do with intelligence or expertise.
