Is it much easier than TrueNAS?

I went with TrueNAS because it’s open-source, and it’s been smooth sailing.

(I just use it as a NAS, nothing more)

I’m more than happy to share. If others didn’t share I wouldn’t have been able to do my hobby.

The biggest difference is I used different corners, and I made mine a bit deeper (28cm total, so that it would fit a 30cm 3D printer bed)

Right now the back is literally empty, I’m planning on moving all the power cords there soon.

The HDDs are plugged into the ODROID H4+ (the thing that looks like a PSU)

If you can make your own like I did I would highly recommend it.

If you have the Alu tubing cut and threaded for you most of the work is done

The thing that looks like a PSU is actually a ODROID H4+ it has 4 SATA and power connectors, so I just power it from that.

Jip everything is running in proxmox, except Home-Assistant I moved that to bare metal

I’m pretty sure I can stand on it without issues, if I add some corner plates it would be even stronger.

But when in doubt you can always go for 3030 or 4040 which would be really strong, you can probably park a motorcycle on those

Here’s some things for scale (AA Battery)

Spent the whole day looking at routers and switches, and I think I’m going with Unifi their prices are on par with the open source alternatives and they seem to just work no fuss, and I can run them fully locally and not depend on the cloud if I wanted.

I don’t want to buy any hardware that can be taken away from me with a firmware push where I now need to pay a subscription to use my product. Wile that risk with Unifi doesn’t seem to be zero, it seems close to zero.

I’ve been comparing managed switches that are 2.5Gbps all day and honestly Unifi isn’t that expensive, it’s often the cheapest option. The price jumps like crazy once you want a switch that’s managed and 2.5Gbps

Right now I’m struggling to figure out what hardware to buy The Zyxel XGS1210-12 seems perfect but it won’t fit in a 10" rack

Mainly I like tinkering and building my own server and systems.

I’d like to have different VLAN’s so that I can keep Home Assistant, sus wifi devices, my services, my personal network, and a guest network separate

I’ll probably add more mini-PC’s or hardware as time goes by, so it being future proof-ish would be great

The age of the internet really left an impact. My name has an accent in one of the letters, there is no way I’m going to give my kid a name like that, just because Computers. Would have loved to use name.surname more but yea both are common so there are thousands of us, never been able to do that.
