  • I fucking LOVE my Unraid server, but I’ve had it for many years and they’ve since changed their pricing. A very, very solid WebUI.

I paid like $40 just once for it, and it looks like it’s $250 now. Honestly I’d just pay the $50/yr, it has been immensely helpful to get me started as my first homelab.

And btw I use Arch for my desktop whenever I use Linux.

I helped a friend build a server to use Unraid for his new house, and to get him started with Home Assistant and the arr stack. He’s always been fairly good with computers, but had 0 Linux experience. After about 6 months he became self efficient and no longer needed to ask for help.

Edit: my original new price was unique to me to upgrade my grandfather license.

  • Think of it as more modular.

I personally used Traefik, but only because I’m a masochist and it would be useful to know in IT workplace.

Traefik + CrowdSec + CowdSec Traefik Bouncer.

Traefik handles the traffic, and said traffic has to get a green light from CrowdSec + Bouncer before it can go anywhere.

The concept of CrowdSec is honestly super awesome.

  • Get Unraid for your server OS. Its nuts how good it is at being beginner friendly, while being robust when needed. It has a docker app “store”, as well as plugins, and a virtual machine manager as well. It also has a very, very nice Web GUI: you manage the server from another PC you use in your house.

I can not overstate how much I learned by starting with Unraid.

Unraid + Unifi network equipment. Everything is scheduled and automatic, with the exception of large Unraid updates, but those are only every ~6 months. Every night mover from cache SSD - > HDD array, then checks for plugin updates, then docker container updates, if Monday morning SSD trim, and if 1st of the month does an array parity check/repair.

After all that if it’s Monday morning, Unifi will check for firmware then software updates.

Sometimes a docker container will get a breaking update maybe once a year, and then I just go look @ documentation and see what needs to be changed to the config to fix.

  • Reading their reply reminded me:

When you first install Jellyfin’s repo, and then addon, the initial setup starts. It will ask you if you want to use it Native mode or Plugin mode. Chose Plugin, Native has been deprecated and won’t work. Plugin mode now basically just points Kodi to where the video files live on the server with Jellyfin. For me it still eliminates ALL transcoding, including HDR, subtitles, and Dolby Atmos/DTS-X.

Then the extra addon Kodi Sync makes Kodi play nicely with Jellyfin’s internal database, and makes progress and newly added media sync instantly and in the background.

Their documentation is very good, just remember Native Mode is deprecated and Plugin Mode now does the same thing.

  • Did you use the addon where you have to access Jellyfin from the Addons menu and then use the weird UI with way too many sub-menus? Their own addon where you add their repo is the best IMO, it adds all your jellyfin media (except live tv) to Kodi’s native UI/categories. So all the movies show up under Movies, get their own card, can be opened to see all the scraped online data, like actors, plot, and posters. Same for music and shows.

I personally just love Kodi. It’s UI is probably the most intuitive UI I’ve ever used. It’s just so clean and simple, and CoreELEC makes it fast and efficient. The only media format it can’t play is Dolby Vision, but all my media that has DV has other HDR fallbacks.

Then if I wanna watch something not on my TV with N2+ everything is synced with Jellyfin, so all my progress is saved and I can for example, pick up on a show where I left off watching it on my tablet with their app. A best of both worlds setup for me.
