Have a look at YUNOhost for your OS. It’s based on Debian and is designed to be really easy to set up and use, which might be useful for you as you have young children and not much time.

Check out Cherrytree. I use it for keeping track of literally everything in my life. It’s hierarchical and searchable and you can insert files as well as hyperlink to external files, URLS and other nodes internally. You can export the database in various formats and there is also the option to have it encrypted. You can theme it in the preferences to make it look nicer too (the default is a bit retro-looking). It’s free and open source and AFAIK you can open your database in other applications, so you’re not locked into it.

If you want to sync it across devices just use Syncthing or whatever file sync app you’re selfhosting.

I highly recommend it! Probably the most important application I have on my computer.

I installed Jitsi Meet on my YUNOhost server and am very impressed. It works really well and needed basically no setting up after installing.

Also gives you an opportunity to buy more beer on the way home so you don’t have to stop drinking.

Not sure whether it helps but after the last major update on YUNOhost it notified me of a few extra DNS entries I had to make. If I remember correctly it was under Domains, rather than Diagnosis.

YUNOhost is designed for this. You can do almost everything graphically via the webadmin. Mine has been running for a couple of years and I’m very happy with it. I have email, XMPP (both of which were installed out of the box), a website, file sharing and a few other things. There are a tonne of apps available, including Fediverse instances, Nextcloud. It’s a very cool thing to have available for making self-hosting more accessible.

There are different parties with opposing interests in any technology.

I think the UK legislation is well-meaning on the part of lawmakers, who think they are only combatting CSAM. Which does need combatting. But remember that the average MP has no more technical education than their average constituent and they are dependent on advice from third parties. Because of how our economy is structured, rights campaigners and academics have far less resources to advise or lobby government (and shape public opinion through media) than corporations and wealthy individuals do.

In an ideal situation you would have a working and middle class which is not only better educated but prosperous enough to have their interests properly represented and amplified to at least the level of business and finance. In a less ideal but better situation you would have business and finance reduced to the level of ordinary people, so that they can’t outcompete citizens’ at every turn.

I wish more people understood that economic inequality isn’t just a problem when it manifests as poverty at the bottom end. It’s literally the size of the disparity that causes a continually worsening feedback loop of representation.

That might sound complicated but it’s not and it’s as old as the hills: Better protection of your rights makes it harder for the wealthy to exploit you. You have more power and prosperity as a result.

Edit: I want to add that it’s for the reasons above that Libre culture is radically valuable and empowering.

Another option for some Kobos is Inkbox/QuillOS. It’s a full open source OS replacement and is very cool. It was very usable last summer when I tried it out on my Kobo Clara HD and is probably even better now.

I can’t comment on Stalwart but if you’re looking for something reliable and easy to install on a VPS I recommend YUNOhost, which is a FOSS server OS that has email out of the box.

Some people have to buy ebooks with DRM to support the author but like to strip it using a Calibre plugin, for various reasons.

The people who make writefreely are saying that they are working on making image uploads possible for self-hosted instances, not just their own at write.as. Currently if you are self-hosting you can insert an image but it must be hosted elsewhere and inserted via a markdown link.

This looks a lot like Writefreely.

And you would be able to see blog posts in a fediverse feed and subscribe to a blog that way.
