This one hurt a bit too close to home.

In high school and college I did believe that in my lifetime humanity would really start space exploration and colonization.

I studied engineering and did everything I could to contribute to this great advancement of humanity. I got a double master degree in aerospace manufacturing, specialized in the machining of exotic alloys used in aerospace, worked on rocket engines, developed new machining techniques that unlocked new possibilities for aircraft engines performances and was working my way up to be one of the few people in Europe highly specialized on machining technique for these alloys used in aerospace.

Then in 2016 I read more and more about “Collapse”, more specifically the collapse of our thermo industrial civilization. We are not going to colonize space, we will be lucky if most of humanity does not die in the coming century.

So rather than contributing to the future of humanity with my work I was contributing to worsen the condition of life on earth by accelerating climate change and the uses of resources.

I had a bit of an existential crisis at this point.

  • It’s not just for my home server but for EOL or other issues I used bitwarden emergency access options for passwords. Of anything happens to me my wife can request access to my vault and if I don’t deny it in a certain timeframe she will have full access to it.

I did that after my brother in law got in an accident and fell into a coma. I’m very grateful he had all his password saved in chrome on his unlocked laptop because if not it would have made the period insanely more difficult for my sister.

Simple things like paying the bills would I been insanely more difficult and stressful and you don’t need extra stress in this period.

  • This is the opposite of what a flat earther would say.

The main position of flat-earther (and the backers of conspiracy theories) is that you can’t trust sources, especially official sources of course.

And if you look at things without having the official explanation you start to notice things that, in appearance, do not make sense. Like the fact that you can see farther away than the curvature of earth allows. Of course it’s very easy to explain with the refractory properties of the atmosphere but can be quite difficult to demonstrate.

PS: earth is definitely round, I’m not trying the defend their theory.
