Today I made vegetarian salisbury steaks using impossible patties, store bought broth, and fresh veggies and herbs (and some stuff I had laying around). I spent less than $15 total (costco, price per unit) on the ingredients. It took 2 hours of cooking.

Assuming a wage of $25/hr, lower than adequate but relatively high in service fields in the US (those who work enough that delivery is super tempting), my meal cost me $65 including my labor. That’s less than it’d cost for delivery of a similar meal, is higher quality than I could get for delivery, and I’ve got leftovers for tomorrow, which I wouldn’t get with delivery.

Delivery is a scam. Gig economy Based delivery doubly so.

This is something you and I aren’t going to agree on. From my perspective its an issue of consent. From yours (it seems) and issue of wellbeing. Our heirarchies of needs seem to value personal agency at different levels. I consider it to be a core need, and from that perspective I would never (given the power to do so) exert my will to care for someone as a ward of the state or whatever org I represent without the consent of the individual to be cared for.

I also recognize what you’re saying, that at a certain level of incompetence a person should no longer be able to advocate for themselves and should be required to accept care.

I personally believe that if a person can communicate, they can communicate consent. If a person is completely unable to communicate, it may be a good idea to give them a period of investigative and protective custody to determine their safety, but from their perspective that could be a kidnapping.

I’m not saying your perspective is wrong, but this is a situation that needs to be handled with extreme nuance and care by professionals.

On competency evaluations:

I’d need a large panel of Psyches from the same and similar communit(y/ies) as the JD (john doe/ jane doe) to all agree they are incompetent before I’d be comfortable allowing their consent to be violated in the manner of state endorsed internment in medical or mental facilities. If the medical community agrees, and the people around the JD agree, then and only then should the JD be given care without their consent.

Neither is forcing them to accept care they don’t want.

Like, in what way is that viable? This is a hostile system that should be viewed as an assailant, not as a competing ideal that can be reasoned and compromised with.

I’ve got a 8GB swap drive nowadays (yes I know its awful for flash memory, idc) but the vm.swappiness isn’t adjustable on FreeBSD so it just simply isn’t swappy enough. Rarely ever goes above 128MB swap in use, it orefers to crash.

Its not an active project for me as of right now but I plan to make a tool to adjust the swappiness at some point when I figure out what chunk of code is responsible for it in the kernel. At that point I’ll be able to use it to drastically increase memory related stability, until then though the 2005 era business PC remains a lumbering creature, with much care needed to keep it from crashing.

Firefox ESR will open, and can navigate to lite.duckduckgo.com or other lightweight sites. Attempting to use multiple tabs results in OOM killer killing firefox, or the whole system locking up, whichever comes first.

what can you run with only one gig of RAM

Mostly just text editors and terminal apps. For me, this is a good thing, for most I assume its a dealbreaker.

Occasionally I’ll boot the machine off a USB HDD with windows 95 on it for retro gaming. It handles that like a champ.

That’s kind of the point though, when left go their own devices people generally choose to work, its just that when their base needs are met they will tend to work that brings them joy first instead of pay.
