From everything I could find, he had felonies unrelated to J6 that prevented him from owning guns, but I couldn’t find a source detailing what those felonies were.

I think it’s because both are happening, they’re just coming from different sources. The authoritarian goals are managed by the oligarchs and channeled through the (easily manipulated) narcissist in Chief, while the petty vindictiveness stems directly from him.
Reminds me of the Whitefish Energy scandal after Hurricane Maria in 2017.
