  • Some people want to try their hand at writing, which is totally fine. You can even be super proud of your work.

The problem comes from expecting others to read it. Especially the DM, whose job it is to incorporate your backstory somewhat. So it is like forcing someone instead of on their own accord.

Every TTRPG are just mechanics to tell a story.

D&D’ rules may be 80% about combat, but they are all still there to facilitate the story. You aren’t wargaming.

You roll dice to see how the story enfolds. Having it cut off abruptly because of a mistake calculation on the DM’s part while prepping the session goes against the story.

Also, having a player sit around twiddling their thumbs for the rest of the session because their character died is not fun and goes against the reason why we play games in the first place.

Fuck realism, it is a fantasy game we play to have fun. So getting rid of unfun aspects isn’t just recommended, it is a necessity.

Most of these are just gimmick characters that will have one fun interaction with the group and then become useless. They can be used for one-shots, but not full campaigns.

Like the dragonborn one, after the initial interaction where they explain the skin condition. Most players will just go “okay” and move on.

Except for the sentient hat one. That has a mystery attached and you can keep changing the mannequin throughout. Maybe it also works on a mop or barrel.

  • Ran a Pirate campaign once. Had a pirate faction of Dwarfs called the Reefbeards.

They lived up, under and along the water for so long, they had colorful corals growing in their beards.

They also had a lot of cool technology, so they shot grapplehooks to swing over and ran around with entire cannons on their back.
