Heyo! Just another random who’s moving over from centralized social media to the Fediverse. Mastodon wasn’t too bad but I love anything like Reddit!

Games, anime, Japanese, food, and music are my loves. Fanfic beats food tho, I can read for hours instead!

  • Well, depends on the almighty algorithm overlords. People were making Project 2025 PSAs left and right, and I definitely saw some YT shorts talking about the evil shit GOP and Trump would do. Cause I’m blue and YT knows (or at least thinks ) I want to see and agree with that stuff. A Gen-Z who watched Joe Rogan and Andrew Tate all day isn’t gonna get that. I hate and have never used TikTok, but we can make a similar assumption for them. Anyway, I’m more pissed at my friends who sat on their ass and didn’t vote (even after I told them that’s upsetting), who have recently said “I wish I voted.”

I guess we need to learn how to convince those around us to give a fuck. I wish I was more charasmatic…

  • I definitely plan to used RAID for my drives.

To follow 3-2-1, have the working copy, a copy on a SD, and a copy on cloud (encrypted of course). Depending on the size of the snapshot it will go to Proton or Google Drive (Sticking to Google is silly, I know, but I don’t have a second location to have secure my data lol). 2 is met by having it on SD and Cloud. 1 is met by saving encrypted snapshot on cloud.

  • Specifically talking about the FireTV, 99% sure the app doesn’t have a Killswitch, I’ve checked. I use it all the time on PC and Mobile though :)

Setting up the VPN on the router sounds great, but can home routers (I have Cox) flash VPN software on them (thought they couldn’t)? Also is it MAC or IP filtering (would I have to set a device to static IP) for deciding which devices use the VPN tunnel? How good is it about switching servers (like if a server I’m connected to is on maintenance or is overloaded)? Not too worried about the web issues, can always hop back on the regular Wi-Fi and use the app.

  • At first I was getting it for some proxy services and fediverse services, and didn’t think much of it cause I thought it was just some thing small projects used instead of cloudflare/google. But yeah now I’ve been seeing it on more “official” websites and I’m happy about it after I took time to read their github page.

I especially love it since I don’t have to cry over failing 30 “click the sidewalk” captchas in a row for daring to use a VPN + uBlock + Librewolf to look at a single page of search results. I can sit on my ass for 5 sec and breeze through, assured that I’m not a robot 🥹

I’ve definitely put in way more (very worthwhile) effort into Fediverse apps than I ever would have for regular centralized social media. No algorithm is truly a blessing, but feels a dash like a curse because even though I religiously use and follow tags to find content, I still am not getting the stuff I truly want to see. I love fanart, fanfic, fan content in general of anime and games, but most of interests have dead or 1 person talking tags. Finding accounts who aren’t on your instance is a pain in the in the ass, since there accounts might be secretly hidden from me due to the servers not interacting yet. So even when I do like an artist’s pic, the rest still don’t show up because the server is still grabbing info…

Pixelfed is especially bad for this, discovery is hard with other instances, and god forbid you follow someone from mastodon. Some mastodon accounts seem to appear on the app, but some others don’t even show up in my follow list. I do use Pixelix as a client which is a tad better, and yet some mastodon accounts still glitch it.

But those problems literally don’t exist on places like Tumblr, which is what I use in replacement of Instagram due to the fact that finding artists and fanart is far more easier, and I can’t live without that content. I’ve made an account on a misskey instance (I know enough Japanese to not be miserable on there) but the UX also scares me and I have no idea how to actually find the art I want because they’re on other instances and some of the biggest servers have signups blocked to non-JP accounts (even with VPN).

Places like Lemmy have it easy, following communities and users is no sweat, since they’re all little micro hubs like Reddit anyway. But literally ever other service is WAY more effort than reg social media.

So once we get more people, and make it easier to follow other instances, I’ll be living the dream~

  • Well, for the download/export stuff, yeah, you just go to the “File” tab and click the download drop down tab, and you can save it to the computer or Google Drive. Which some people still didn’t know about somehow but… (Some people never touch the tabs I guess)

But when I mean file sharing, I’m talking like sharing stuff to another person’s drive, or simply just letting them have access to it by clicking a link. To be fair, sometimes the sharing is wonky or really dumb, but it’s basically, give access to specific emails/accounts, give access to anyone within your organization with the link, or give access to anyone who has the link. You can specify if this access link should be viewer, commenter, or editor.

The amount of people who have shared a document with incorrect access rights where teachers can’t see their work and have to ask them to resubmit, or trying to do group projects with people who claim that it’s not working, is fucking insane. I get some of them are just being lazy and probably lying about it not working to get more time to procrastinate, but dead serious, some people just have no idea how to share files correctly. My public speaking class was full of these blunders, especially when sharing a presentation done with Canva, and we’d always have to waste like 3 minutes waiting for them to fix it…

  • Yeah, we got Chromebooks, with predownloaded stuff on them (hell, our School policy probably PREVENTED us from downloading anything…) or you just used Chrome browser for everything. We definitely weren’t allowed to use terminal either. The extensions store was blocked/didn’t allow downloads.

Chromebooks aren’t built for storage and performance, they’re made for the cloud. So anything that you wouldn’t encounter on Chrome/Google Drive means they have zero knowledge of it.

I think the last time I remember using tablets was like 2nd grade to do math games. But that could’ve changed.

You were also punished/heavily discouraged from using personal laptops instead of school issued Chromebooks, cause they wanted to ensure you had no issues completing work and that you weren’t cheating on assignments and tests. So students were literally forced to use them.

  • Me and a classmate were absolutely stunned when we saw this girl typing in her password, and using Caps Lock to do uppercase letters instead of shift. We looked at her like, “WTF are you doing?” And she seriously did not know what the shift button was for.

I just don’t know how nobody showed or told her this before, and we’re in college…

  • Gen Z here, in college.

Some of these people are braindead when it comes to tech.

Like, I get if you’re not used to technology because you’re poor/had a lack of access to it, as many people might not have a home computer. So there were kids who were absolutely hopeless when it came to using windows at my tech school because they were broke, and the school only gives out Chromebooks (cause they’re shitty and cheap).

But outside of not knowing a UI and different file formats, you should absolutely know how to use anything on the web, unless you literally lived in an area with absolutely no internet and electricity.

Some people at my college STILL don’t know how to share Google documents correctly, and it’s the most insane and frustrating thing to me. Literally any device with an Internet connection can use it. Windows, apple, Chromebook, Linux, you name it. HOW DO YOU NOT KNOW HOW TO WORK GOOGLE DRIVE?!?!?!

Like many comments have said, devs have dumbed down a lot of shit in the name of protecting users, and people expect stuff to just work without any issues/effort, which I get, but damn, you’ve never simply done a 5 mins search on Google or YouTube for a quick fix?

My hand-me-down phone journey started with a Samsung G Note 4 as a kid, then a old iPhone (don’t remember which), moved to a Moto G Play 7 (I adore that thing today), moved to iPhone X, and now I’m at a Pixel 8a cause I put GrapheneOS on it. My mom got me it as a grad gift cause I hated my iPhone so much for all the shit I couldn’t do while I was on it. I’ve always just liked Android and Windows more for the freedom to fuck up (which I never did), instead of Apple’s shitty walled garden. And now I’m on Fedora, because I know I don’t have to subject myself to a shit user experience on Windows just for simplicity.

But other people my gen who aren’t willing to be adventurous for a bit and even try will never do that. Hell, you get shamed in school for not loving the Apple overlords and wanting Apple deciding everything in your life (green bubble shaming is real, I hated middle and early high school…). We want quick and easy, and we got it, but at what cost?

  • I’m in a beginner Python class and was getting my ass kicked by a lab last week, and although I hate them with all my heart, I tried to use a chatbot to see if it was worthwhile since my friend who’s been doing Java for about 3 years and her classmate frequently seem to use it.

That shit was so unhelpful, as it gave me stuff that was definitely way above the level we’re currently at, and even then my teacher would’ve known it wasn’t my code based on how it was written. In the end I just asked my teacher for help on the first part of the assignment, and when I struggled in the second I actually took the time to go through my code step by step to see where it was going wrong, and that shit was more satisfying in the end.

It just makes me think of those dumbasses who used Google Translate for Spanish class and would use a verb tense we’ve absolutely never learned in class cause they’re too dumb to even cheat right.

This artist is named Gigi D.G. apparently, but their webcomic is called Hiimdaisy, and they did a silly Persona 4 webcomic years ago that people like me still quote to this day. It got a comic dub on Youtube by a channel named Sapphire. I can immediately tell by the artstyle that it’s them.

They have a TV Tropes page.

I’m a baby in the FF fandom, 15 was my first ever FF game, although I do know a decent amount due to my mom being a longtime fan since FF6. I found it funny that the game was advertised as “good for newcomers and old fans” cause all I felt was disappointment about my first ever FF game, while my mom sat there pissed thinking about how she wasted money on a day one edition (that we didn’t open till December 2024, lol)

That game… I wanted to like it, but after hearing about how good the previous FFs are, and just knowing how good other JRPG series are, I can’t believe they flopped so hard like that. Good thing is the other games can’t be worse, so that’s nice.
